Armed Clashes Erupt in Burebiey Along South Sudan–Ethiopia Border

September 20, 2025 – Burebiey, Eastern Upper Nile State

Heavy fighting has broken out today Moring at 7:00 hrs between SPLA-IO forces, reportedly reinforced by White Army militias, and government troops of the SSPDF in the strategic border town of Burebiey. The sound of sustained artillery fire has been heard across the Ethiopian frontier, signaling the intensity of the confrontation.

According to field reports, SPLA-IO units have been mobilizing in the southern corridor for over a month, preparing a coordinated offensive aimed at seizing Burebiey and advancing toward Nasir and Malakal. This escalation marks a significant shift in rebel strategy and poses a direct threat to government control in Upper Nile.

If Burebiey falls to forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar, it would represent a major setback for President Salva Kiir’s administration, potentially destabilizing the broader region and undermining recent efforts toward peace and reconciliation.

Local communities near the conflict zone are at heightened risk, and humanitarian access may be severely constrained. Cross-border implications are also emerging, with Ethiopia closely monitoring the situation amid fears of spillover violence.

(3). 9 volunteer defense lawyers from the United States of America (USA).

(4). 11 defense lawyers sponsored by the German government.

(5). 10 defense lawyers from East African countries—Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia covering their own costs.

(6). 4 local lawyers (South Sudanese), funded by the family of the accused.

(7). 2 self-sponsored lawyers from Ghana and Nigeria.

(8). 1 defense lawyer from Sudan.
