PRESIDENT KIIR REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO PEACE ON 43RD ANNIVERSARY OF SPLM/SPLA
JUBA, MAY 16, 2026 -Thousands of SPLM members, veterans and supporters have gathered at Juba National Stadium for the commemotion of the 43rd anniversary of the SPLM/A founded on May 16, 1983.
The President of the Republic His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, Who is the Chairman of the SPLM, gave high praise to those brave individuals, both male and female, who initiated the liberation war in order to achieve freedom for the people of South Sudan.
This vibrant celebration was marked by patriotic songs as well as performances by South Sudanese cultural groups and artists, reiterating their call for unity peace, and national development.
In his address, President Kiir commended the brave members of the SPLA for igniting the liberation struggle on May 16, 1983, stressing the role played by them in enduring that people of South Sudan enjoy freedom and sovereignty.
The President reaffirmed SPLM's commitment to continue holding onto the principles of the May 16 revolution, highlighting that the liberation party remains dedicated to safeguarding peace, consolidating national unity and advancing democratic governance.
Kiir also stressed that development remains high on the agenda of the SPLM-led government by ensuring the provision of basic social services, economic empowerment and other developmental needs to it's people.
The speakers at the function urged South Sudanese to learn from the sense of unity displayed during the days of the struggle, emphasising that sustainable peace, reconciliation and national unity remain critical pillars for building a stable and progressive nation.
