FVP Dr Riek Machar Trial Resumes as Court Considers Request to Record Testimony

The high-profile trial against First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and other SPLM/A-IO leaders is set to resume this morning, Monday, August 10, 2026, at the usual Freedom Hall in Juba.

During today’s session, the court is expected to receive the prosecution’s response to Dr. Machar’s request for his testimony to be fully recorded. The defense says the recordings would preserve the proceedings for future generations to study and contribute to strengthening South Sudan’s justice system.

Following the court’s consideration of the request, Dr. Machar is expected to begin his official defense testimony today, regardless of whether the prosecution supports or objects to his request.

The proceedings remain closely watched as Dr. Machar prepares to present his defense in the ongoing case linked to the 2021 violence in Nasir.

Dungdit Media Calls for Urgent Action Following Reported Abduction of CEO in Juba POC 1

Juba, South Sudan — August 8, 2026

Dungdit Media has learned with deep concern of the reported abduction of its Chief Executive Officer, Mak Banguot Gok, also known as Mak Johnson, from his shelter in Juba POC 1 yesterday.

According to information received by Dungdit Media, several men in civilian clothing allegedly entered Mak Johnson's shelter and took him away. Witnesses reportedly identified some of the individuals as suspected members of the National Security Service (NSS). Dungdit Media has not independently verified the identities of those involved.

The circumstances surrounding his reported detention and his current whereabouts remain unclear. His family, colleagues, and members of the Dungdit Media team are deeply concerned about his safety and well-being.

Dungdit Media calls upon the relevant authorities to immediately clarify whether Mak Johnson is in government custody and, if so, to disclose his whereabouts, the reason for his detention, and ensure that he has access to legal representation and due process.

We further appeal to UN human rights mechanisms, humanitarian protection actors, journalists' organizations, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders to urgently monitor the situation and advocate for the safety and rights of Mak Johnson and the wider Dungdit Media team.

Dungdit Media emphasizes that journalists and media workers must be able to carry out their professional duties without intimidation, unlawful detention, or threats to their safety.

We urge all parties to remain calm and appeal for a peaceful and lawful resolution to the situation.

The opposition SPLM-IO has rejected President Salva Kiir’s proposed inter-party dialogue ahead of South Sudan’s December elections, saying any negotiations to revive the country’s faltering peace process should take place at a neutral venue under regional or international mediation.

The position was conveyed to a delegation from the African Union’s Ad Hoc High-Level Committee for South Sudan (C5), which met SPLM-IO leaders led by acting chairman Oyet Nathaniel Pierino as part of consultations with South Sudan’s political stakeholders.

Leer County, Unity State — A light-hearted community gathering attracted attention after Leer County Commissioner, Hon. Stephen Taker Riak D**g, met with Redfox in an unusual and entertaining dog competition.

The pictures show the two men standing together as their dogs were introduced in front of community members. Redfox was accompanied by a modern, well-trained dog, while Commissioner Stephen Taker Riak D**g presented a local dog.
