📢 Parliament to summon ministers over Rumbek School land allocation

The Transitional National Legislative Assembly will summon government ministers to explain the decision to allocate land from Rumbek National Secondary School to Rumbek University of Science and Technology.

The decision follows a briefing to the Speaker of the Assembly, Joseph Ngere Paciko. Lawmakers raised concerns about the proposal after it led to debate among the public.

Oliver Mori Benjamin, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Information Committee, stated that the Assembly Business Committee views this matter as a priority. He noted that reports of the school being converted into a university required intervention from Parliament.

The issue will move to the committees for higher education and general education. These committees will call the ministers to provide details on the plan.

Rumbek National Secondary School was established in 1945. It is one of the oldest institutions in South Sudan. The dispute began after a government directive to give the school premises to the university.

Last week, Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol stated that President Salva Kiir approved the plan. The Vice President said the government would build a new secondary school as compensation.

The Office of the Vice President stated that the move will not displace the school immediately. The government plans to build a new campus before any relocation, use the current site for a university health sciences faculty, use the site because it is near Rumbek State Hospital.

The government stated that building a new secondary school is more affordable than building a new university.

Despite these statements, some citizens and leaders, including Laat Maker Riak and G*i Mayen Luk, oppose the plan. They argue that the history of the school must be protected. Parliament will now review these concerns to determine the next steps.

📢 The Chairman of Gok Youth Union–Juba, Hon. Madom Majuec Geec, has dissolved the Technical Committee of the Cueibet County Football Team.

In line with the directive, the President of the Cueibet County Football Team has been instructed to form a new committee in consultation with the GYU–J Secretary of Culture and Sports.

The dissolution was made in preparation for the upcoming Cueibet County inter-payams peace tournament, set to commence soon.

An official document detailing the directive was issued from the Office of the Gok Youth Union–Juba Chairperson.

📢 Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs Adut Salva Kiir Mayardit has donated two vehicles and 10 motorbikes to local authorities in Rumbek East County, Lakes State, to strengthen service delivery and administrative efficiency.

The donation includes a Land Cruiser hardtop allocated to County Commissioner Zachariah Malual Anyuon, and a Land Cruiser pickup designated for Paramount Chief Sultan Manyang Derder. Ten TVS motorbikes were also handed over to executive chiefs to support daily operations across the county.

The items were officially presented on Wednesday in Thon-Aduel, the headquarters of Rumbek East County, by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol alongside Envoy Adut Salva Kiir and Lakes State Governor Madhang Majok Meen. The handover took place during the third day of a high-level government delegation’s visit to Lakes State.

Officials noted that the vehicles and motorbikes will significantly improve mobility for local government leaders, enabling better coordination of government activities and faster response to community needs.

The initiative reflects the Government of South Sudan’s recognition of the people of Lakes State and its commitment to empowering local leadership and enhancing public service delivery across the region.
