Michael Makuei Lueth has declined to consider a petition filed on behalf of Benjamin Bol Mel, citing “impolite” language and its premature circulation in the media.

In a 11 March 2026 response, Makuei acknowledged receiving the petition—submitted by lawyer Kiir Chol—but criticized its tone as “disrespectful, uncouth, and unacceptable.” He also faulted the legal team for sharing the document publicly on the same day it was filed, saying this removed the matter from the ministry’s purview.

Makuei said the case will not be considered unless the lawyers issue a written explanation and apology, including clarification on how the petition was leaked. It remains unclear whether the legal team will comply.

Kiir Travels to South Africa for Bilateral Talks with Ramaphosa

Juba, March 14, 2026 – Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, departed Juba on Saturday for an official visit to South Africa, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to Presidential Press Secretary Arek Aldo Deng, the visit aims to strengthen the long-standing relations between the two nations and expand cooperation in key areas such as economic development, institutional capacity building, and skills development.

The trip follows a recent meeting between Presidents Kiir and Ramaphosa in Addis Ababa and comes after an earlier visit by South Sudan’s Presidential Special Envoy to South Africa.

Officials say the discussions are expected to deepen diplomatic ties and advance shared interests between the two countries.

SPLM Secretary-General Says South Sudan Will Not Go Backward Despite Health Funding Cuts

Akol Paul Koordit, the Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), has expressed confidence that South Sudan will remain resilient despite concerns over possible hospital closures due to reductions in international health funding.

Speaking during a recent meeting, Dr. Koordit said he had discussed with an international figure the possibility that hospitals in rural areas could shut down as donors withdraw support.

He recalled a personal experience from 1998 in Madubai village near Meridi, where he suffered a severe case of malaria at a time when there were no hospitals in the area.

According to Dr. Koordit, an elderly woman in the village advised him to chew the bitter roots of a small tree as traditional medicine, which he said helped him recover.

He said the story reflects the resilience of local communities even in difficult circumstances.

“The closure of hospitals should not discourage us. The fact that we even have hospitals today is already progress, because in the past we had none,” he said.

Dr. Koordit added that the country remains determined to move forward.

“We are going nowhere. We will remain here. This country will not disappear, and it will never go backward again,” he said.

Baby Dau Atem has successfully undergone surgery in Nairobi after receiving support from the Manyang Disability Foundation.

The young boy, who had a large swelling on his face, came to public attention after a video shared on TikTok from a village in Warrap State.

Manyang Malet, the Australia-based founder of the foundation, helped bring the child to Juba for medical assessment, but doctors said the surgery could not be performed locally due to the severity of the condition.

Dau was later transferred to Nairobi where the operation was successfully carried out, with Malet thanking God and donors who made the treatment possible.

Fuel Price Jumps Again as Crisis Deepens

Fuel prices have surged again in parts of Juba, with a litre now selling for SSP 11,500, up sharply from SSP 9,500 just a day earlier.

Traders say the situation could worsen if disruptions at the Nimule border are not resolved soon. Nimule serves as the main entry point for fuel and other essential goods into South Sudan, and any delays or restrictions there quickly affect supplies in the capital.

Local fuel dealers warn that continued uncertainty at the border could push prices even higher in the coming days, placing additional pressure on transport costs and the prices of basic commodities across the city.

Authorities have yet to announce measures to stabilize the situation, as residents and businesses brace for further increases.

Director General Confirms Power Restored at Juba Teaching Hospital After Two-Day Blackout

Electricity has been restored at Juba Teaching Hospital following a two-day power outage that disrupted services at the country’s main referral facility.

Hospital Director General Gift Natana said the blackout occurred after the facility ran out of fuel for its generators due to a shortage of operational funds. He confirmed that fuel was secured last evening, allowing full restoration of power and the resumption of normal medical services.

Gift added that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Energy and Dams are working together to ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply for the hospital going forward.

The temporary outage had raised concerns about service delivery at the vital healthcare institution.

Former Juba Deputy Mayor Vows Legal Action Against Musician Amid Ongoing Dispute

Former Deputy Mayor of Juba, Hon. Thiik Thiik Machar, has pledged to pursue legal action against musician Pioth Peace, dismissing rumors of violence and stating that he intends to “discipline him through the law.”

The dispute reportedly stems from claims that Pioth Peace mentioned or criticized the former deputy mayor in three separate songs. The controversy began earlier last month after Thiik accused the artist of having a relationship with his wife, Aluel Deng Awol, who is known as the proprietor of Sky View Club in Juba.

According to statements attributed to Thiik, Pioth Peace is believed to still be in Juba. He has asserted that the musician will not leave the city without being apprehended and presented to the police to face legal proceedings.

As of now, Pioth Peace is reportedly in hiding, and no official statement has been released by him regarding the allegations.

Authorities have not yet issued a public comment on the matter.

BREAKING NEWS:

Tax Agency Says Cash Shortage Not Within Its Mandate

The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) has distanced itself from efforts to address the country’s worsening cash crisis, stating that resolving liquidity shortages does not fall within its mandate.

Speaking in Juba, SSRA Board Chairperson Stephen Dhieu Dau said the authority’s primary responsibility is limited to collecting taxes and remitting them to the national treasury.

“The cash crisis and its resolution will come from monetary and fiscal policy, not from the SSRA,” he said.

His remarks follow a directive issued by outgoing Commissioner General William Anyuon Kuol requiring taxpayers to settle their obligations in physical cash — a move that reportedly led to delays at the Nimule Border Crossing.

Meanwhile, SSRA Technical Adviser Aggrey Tisa Sabuni revealed that the authority collected 1.1 trillion SSP during the 2024–2025 fiscal year and is targeting an increase to 1.5 trillion SSP in the next financial year.

Civil society activist Edmund Yakani said responsibility for addressing the liquidity crisis lies with the Ministry of Finance and the central bank, attributing the situation in part to declining public confidence in commercial banks.

The debate unfolds as South Sudan grapples with rising inflation, currency depreciation, and limited access to cash.
