South Sudanese have staged an online protest after the special court in Juba ordered the suspended First Vice President Riek Machar to remove his necktie in the trial. The court order sparked mixed reactions among South Sudanese questioning fair trials of Machar and his co-accused in such dramatic proceedings.

Last week Machar and his co-accused were ordered by the special court not to wear neckties, but the SPLM-IO contrarily dismissing media report. IO described the news published as and fabricated and falsified allegations politically motivated.

Today 101 session, Prosecutor Ajo, who is a government advocate, objected to seeing Machar appear with a necktie and present the matter before the court, protesting that Machar's necktie is a breach of court orders.

Machar defense lawyer Deng John opposed the prosecutor's demands, arguing the complaints should be filed separately. But his claim was legally turned down.

The special court ordered Machar to take off his necktie because the order is applicable to all accused. They argued law treated all people equally; no one is above the law.

The office of suspended Vice President Dr. Riek Machar on trial has denied allegations the court has prohibited SPLM-IO leader from wearing a necktie in the court proceedings. Machar's press secretary, Puok Both Baluang, treated the social media report as unfounded allegations. He said the claims are fabricated and false.

"The request submitted by the First Vice President before the court today had nothing to do with neckties or personal appearance. Instead, it addressed the harassment faced by defense lawyers from certain members of the security apparatus—instigated directly by the prosecution team—which has severely hindered the defense's ability to perform its duties," Puok explained.

The National Social Insurance Fund has called for a boycott and declared nonparticipation in the upcoming NSIF symposium meeting scheduled on July 28th, 2026 by Ministry of Labour. War over social insurance hitched between the Ministry of Labor and NSIF board after both parties failed to come to a compromise. NSIF board says they support the establishment of credible, transparent, and sustainable national social insurance scheme pursuant, but they accused the Ministry of Labor failing to address their concerns.

The chairperson of SSUF/A, Gen. Paul Malong Awan, has dismissed Brig. Gen. Marko Kenyang Akoon on Tuesday from the movement. Marko is demoted from brigadier general to the rank of private (PVT). No reason mentioned.

Malong issued dismissal statement without quoting any article that regulates members' gross misconduct within the movement's basic rules. He claimed that Gen. Marko stripped and dismissal was recommendations from an "Investigation Committee."

The governor of Western Equatoria State, Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, on Thursday called on the former governor Alfred Futuyo, loyal to suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, to lay down their weapons and return home. Badagbu appealed during the celebration of South Sudan's 15 years of independence, urging the rebels to abandon violence and embrace peace, dialogue, and reconciliation. The Troika countries warned South Sudan against interparty dialogue plan without the presence of suspended Vice President Dr. Riek Machar. U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adier says South Sudan interparty dialogue must be inclusive to all signatories to the peace agreement. The United Nations mission in South Sudan has documented dramatic increases of civilian deaths amid ongoing armed conflict between the government and opposition forces. The UN Peacekeeping mission’s Human Rights Division documented more than 200 incidents of conflict-related. They say violence affected 1,388 civilians, of which 1,049 were men, 215 women, 82 boys, and 42 girls between January and March 2026.

"Of those affected, 767 were killed, 457 were injured, 93 were abducted, and 71 were subjected to conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). The overall number of victims rose sharply by 67 percent. The number of civilians killed surged by 89 percent and those injured by 73 percent.

The number of CRSV survivors rose by 31 percent quarter-on-quarter and by 78 percent compared with the same period in 2025, a trend that reflects the deliberate use of sexual violence as a weapon of war."
