The family of Dr. Acuil Malei Aliap, former Minister of Cabinet Affairs and former Minister of General Education and Instruction in Warrap State, has strongly condemned what they described as the unlawful arrest and kidnapping of their son by senior police officers.
In a statement released to the public, the family alleged that Dr. Acuil was received Anonymous call in Juba late at night on May 14, 2026, from a police officer instructing him to report himself to Police Headquarters at around 11 PM. According to the family, he was then detained incommunicado at an undisclosed location until noon on May 15, before being transferred to the Professional Police detention facility in Rock City.
The family claimed that some senior police officials, allegedly acting in the interests of certain politicians from Warrap State, were behind the incident. They further dismissed claims that the detention was an “administrative measure” ordered under instructions from the Presidency, arguing that Dr. Acuil has never been involved in any matter concerning the Office of the President.
The statement also accused some individuals operating the “Watchdog Press” page of attempting to damage Dr. Acuil’s reputation by circulating allegations related to his academic qualifications and personal life. The family challenged the accusers to provide evidence regarding the allegations and called for verification of Dr. Acuil’s academic credentials through the University of Juba and South Sudanese embassies in Kenya and Uganda, where foreign academic documents are authenticated.
Dr. Acuil Malei Aliap currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Juba after previously serving in several ministerial positions in Warrap State, including Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Minister of General Education and Instruction, and Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries.
According to the family, Dr. Acuil’s political influence and public service record have made him a target of political rivalry and what they described as a “campaign of elimination.” They warned that legal action could follow if the alleged unlawful detention continues.
The family further claimed that concerns over threats to Dr. Acuil’s life date back to 2021. They stated that although he was reportedly released on Monday, he was recalled to the detention centre later the same evening and remains under detention.
The family concluded by calling on the Presidency and relevant authorities to intervene, investigate the conduct of the officers involved, and ensure accountability for what they described as abuse of power and violation of the law and release Acuil from detention.
