Former senior government official Mayen Wol Jong has reportedly died this afternoon in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was receiving medical treatment after falling ill.

Hacking group claims attack on Nilepet and demands ransom

Ransomware group Krybit has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack targeting South Sudan’s state-owned Nile Petroleum Corporation.

Cybersecurity trackers recorded the claim on July 23. The hackers reportedly threatened to leak information allegedly taken from Nilepet unless the company pays an undisclosed ransom.

However, Nilepet has not publicly confirmed the attack, and it remains unclear whether any sensitive company data was stolen or internal operations were disrupted.

The company’s public website was accessible at the time of checking, meaning the alleged attack may have targeted other computer systems rather than only the website.

Nilepet is South Sudan’s national oil and gas company and plays a major role in petroleum production, fuel imports, storage, and distribution. A confirmed breach could raise serious concerns about the security of the country’s critical energy infrastructure.
