President Kiir Revokes MP Reath Muoch Tang’s Appointment Following IMF Controversy

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has revoked the appointment of Hon. Reath Muoch Tang, a senior member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), from his position in the Transitional National Legislature.

The decision follows a recent controversy surrounding Hon. Reath’s participation in an International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting held in New York last month.

His presence at the event drew public scrutiny, particularly after the United States imposed visa restrictions on several South Sudanese officials. Although the official government delegation was later cleared to attend the meeting, it distanced itself from Hon. Reath, stating that he was not authorized to represent the country.

Despite this, Hon. Reath took to social media, claiming he—not the government delegation—was representing South Sudan at the IMF event. His statements sparked widespread confusion and criticism.

It remains unclear under what capacity Reath traveled to the U.S. or what his current status is, as he was still serving as a sitting Member of Parliament at the time. His prolonged stay abroad has raised speculation about whether he is in self-imposed exile or engaged in unofficial political activities without the knowledge of his party or the government.

Awan Community Accuses VP Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel of Orchestrating Akot Lual’s Arrest Over UPDF Dispute

Juba – August 3, 2025
Tensions are rising within the political and community spheres after the Awan community publicly accused Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel of orchestrating the arrest of Akot Lual, South Sudan’s Presidential Special Envoy to the Pibor Administrative Area.

In a strongly worded statement released by the Awan Youth Association, the group condemned Mr. Lual’s detention, linking it to his outspoken criticism of the presence of Ugandan troops (UPDF) in South Sudan. According to a letter seen by Hot in Juba, the youth group alleged that the UPDF are being paid $200 per day, reportedly under directives from the Vice President for the Economic Cluster — while the South Sudanese army has gone unpaid for over a year, with soldiers earning as little as SSP 36,000 (approx. $6) per month.

Mr. Lual is known to have had past disagreements with Dr. Bol Mel, including raising concerns over the concentration of power in the Vice President’s office, particularly regarding the holding of multiple high-level government positions by a single individual.

The payment claims and troop deployment details have not been independently verified.

Question: Should public officials be arrested for questioning foreign military presence in the country — or is this a matter of national interest that deserves open debate?
