The world's largest annual animal migration, the Great Nile Migration Landscape, takes place when multiple species of antelope, including Bohor reedbuck, tiang, and white-eared kob, move between South Sudan's Bandingilo National Park and Boma National Park, into Gambella National Park in Ethiopia.
The park is an important refuge for white-eared kob, tiang, and Mongalla gazelle. Other large mammals are buffalo, elephant, African leopard, Nubian giraffe, oryx, Lelwel hartebeest, Northeast African cheetah, common eland, maneless zebra, waterbuck, Grant's gazelle, lesser kudu, bongo, giant eland, and Nile lechwe. Lake No is the largest lake in South Sudan, which is locally known as Dhoo Lake by Ruweng Panaruu community. It is located just north of the vast swamp of the Sudd, at the confluence of the Bahr al Jabal and Bahr el Ghazal rivers, and marks the transition between the Bahr al Jabal and White Nile proper. Lake No is located approximately 1,156 km downstream of Uganda's Lake Albert, the major lake on the White Nile preceding Lake. The lake is considered the center of the Ruweng people of Panaruu section of Dinka peoples.

South Sudan must be the only country where government institutions happily accept donated computers without asking the most important question:

“What’s inside them?”

I just saw that UNDP and AfDB donated computers to the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of South Sudan. Most people are celebrating. I’m not.

Not because I doubt UNDP’s and AfDB intentions, but because cybersecurity doesn’t run on good intentions.

The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of South Sudan are not ordinary offices. I believe, they handle sensitive financial data, government records, economic planning, and information that directly affects the country’s future.

Before these computers touch a government network, who inspected them? Who verified the hardware? Who audited the software? Who confirmed they meet government security standards? If we have them.

Or are we simply accepting anything because it’s free?

In 2018, the African Union reportedly learned a hard lesson when allegations emerged that data from its headquarters had been quietly transferred to servers abroad for years before being discovered.

The lesson was simple: trusted partners and trusted technology are not the same thing.

A single compromised computer can become a doorway into an entire network. That’s not paranoia. That’s how modern cyber espionage works.

Maybe everything is perfectly fine with these donated computers.

But when national financial institutions are involved, “maybe” is not a cybersecurity strategy.

If South Sudan is serious about digital transformation, every donated device should be treated as a potential security risk until independently verified.

Free computers can be expensive if they come with hidden costs.
