JUST IN: The First Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, held a meeting with the IGAD Countries Ambassadors based in the Republic of South Sudan on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024. The meeting revolved around topics related to the progress of the implementation of the roadmap as well as the ongoing intra-party dialogue between the parties of R-ARCSS and the upcoming general elections. The IGAD Ambassadors represent Djibouti, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Ethiopia, who are the guarantors of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
In a statement to the media after the meeting, the Djiboutian Ambassador, Mr. Hassan Robleh, reiterated the support of IGAD for the people of South Sudan. He also emphasised the crucial need for peace and stability in the region. The Djiboutian diplomat encouraged the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGONU) to hold peaceful and credible elections that will promote development in South Sudan. He further called on all parties to the agreement to find an amicable way to reach a consensus to create a conducive atmosphere for elections where citizens can freely participate without fear.
H.E., the First Vice President, briefed the IGAD Ambassadors on the status of the Peace Agreement and outlined the important tasks required to hold free, fair, credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections in the country. These tasks include the completion of security sector reforms, population censuses, the constitution-making process, and providing resources to election-related institutions. Dr. Machar reiterated his and the SPLM's (IO) commitment to the implementation of the peace agreement in letter and spirit.
