Hon.Ateny Wek Ateny Issues Vote of Thanks Following Appointment as National Minister of Information

Juba, November 30, 2025 — The newly appointed National Minister of Information, Telecommunications & Postal Services, Hon. Ateny Wek Ateny, has issued a public message of appreciation to family members, friends, and the general public for their overwhelming congratulatory messages following his recent appointment.

In a statement shared on his official page, Hon.Ateny Wek Ateny expressed deep gratitude to H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, for once again entrusting him with a key sovereign ministry. He described the docket as “one of the most vital” and acknowledged that although challenging, he is prepared to serve with resilience and commitment.

Hon. Ateny also extended heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Justice Michael Makuei Lueth, the outgoing Minister of ICT & PS and the current Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. He praised Hon. Makuei for his willingness to guide him through the complexities of the ministry, acknowledging both the challenges that were resolved and those that remain ahead.

Addressing public criticism, the minister noted that positive and negative feedback alike serve as reminders of his humanity and strengthen his resolve. He emphasized his readiness to serve all citizens equally, regardless of their views toward him.

Among the immediate challenges he highlighted are:

improving South Sudan’s image internationally,
addressing high telephone network tariffs,

and lowering internet costs affecting young people in the country.

He stressed that these issues require collective responsibility but reaffirmed his commitment to act within his constitutional mandate.

Hon. Ateny concluded by stating that although he holds the position by presidential appointment, he ultimately owes his service to the people of South Sudan.

Jok Madut Raises Alarm Over $8 Million Cleaning Contract at Finance Ministry

Respected scholar Jok Madut Jok has voiced deep concern over what he calls an inflated and dubious cleaning contract awarded by South Sudan’s Ministry of Finance.

In a recent Facebook post, Jok criticized the Ministry for hiring a company named Geners to provide janitorial services. He initially cited a rate of $113,000 but noted that the company is now allegedly demanding over $8 million for 27 months of service.

“Some financial deals by South Sudan’s Ministry of Finance are so baffling, you don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” Jok wrote. “This company is now claiming more than $8 million for 27 months of cleaning! Meanwhile, this is a country where salaries haven’t been paid for over a year.”

Jok accused the government of severe financial mismanagement, arguing that such contracts reflect the corruption and carelessness undermining the nation’s economy.

“If we are handing out these kinds of bogus contracts while claiming the country is broke, it shows we’re determined to ruin our own nation,” he stated.

His remarks come at a time of mounting public outrage over unpaid wages, poor public services, and persistent reports of government overspending.

The Ministry of Finance has not yet commented on the contract with Geners or addressed Jok’s criticisms.

Many observers see this as yet another case of misuse of public resources, calling for greater transparency and accountability in government contracting.
