Civil Society Warns of Worsening Insecurity in South Sudan

Civil society networks from South Sudan’s ten states, Greater Pibor and Ruweng have raised alarm over rising violence, displacement, and forced recruitment of civilians.

“These confrontations… displaced approximately 1.5 million civilians in the last month, causing immense suffering and uncertainty,” the groups said.

They urged President Salva Kiir to order an immediate ceasefire and the release of the suspended First Vice President to prevent mass atrocities and allow humanitarian access.

The networks also condemned inflammatory rhetoric, rising communal violence, and called on authorities to address conflicts and support displaced communities.

Civil Society Leader Meets Jonglei Human Rights Advisor Over Assembly Recess, Insecurity and Civilian Protection

The Executive Director of Intrepid South Sudan , Bol Deng Bol, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Jonglei State Government’s Human Rights Advisor, Hon. Simon Manyok Deng, to discuss key governance and human rights concerns affecting the state.

The meeting, held at Hon. Manyok’s office, focused on the prolonged recess of the Jonglei State Legislative Assembly and the humanitarian and human rights implications of ongoing military hostilities between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the SPLA-IO and their allies.

Discussions highlighted the impact of the fighting on civilians, particularly reports of human rights violations and the dire conditions facing displaced populations in Duk, Twic East and Bor counties.

Bol Deng Bol emphasized that the current conflict should not be viewed as an ethnic feud, urging communities and individual civilians to distance themselves from the violence and avoid being drawn into the fighting.

He further called on the warring parties to unconditionally cease hostilities and return to nonviolent mechanisms as stipulated in the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Both parties welcomed the dialogue, describing it as an important step toward promoting human rights, civilian protection and peaceful resolution of conflicts in Jonglei State.
