The U.S. Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent has announced targeted sanctions against Museveni's brutal son Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

These sanctions include asset freezes within U.S. jurisdiction and visa restrictions, effectively limiting Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his immediate family members' international travel and financial dealings.

The official statement from the Treasury Department explicitly condemns Muhoozi Kainerugaba's actions, stating that the sanctions are a direct consequence of his role in the “serious human rights abuses” committed against political opposition figures in Uganda.

This move by the United States sends a clear and powerful message that such violations will not be tolerated and carry tangible consequences for those responsible.

The international outcry continues to grow, with human rights organizations, regional observers, and diaspora communities amplifying their demands for a transparent and independent investigation into these abuses and for immediate measures to safeguard political freedoms in Uganda.

The international spotlight now shines intensely on Kampala, with mounting pressure on Mr. Yoweri Museveni’s government to not only account for these disturbing events but also to address the underlying issues of political repression and the unchecked power of the military.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, once seen as the heir apparent in Uganda’s political landscape, now finds himself isolated by international condemnation and directly sanctioned by a major global power. This scandal has the potential to significantly reshape international engagement with Uganda, forcing a reassessment of its human rights record and the future trajectory of its political development.

The voices demanding justice, both within Uganda and internationally, grow louder, signaling a potentially pivotal moment for the country’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

The Financial Intelligence Unit has sounded the alarm on growing financial irregularities, directing all licensed banks and financial institutions to enforce the compulsory banking of South Sudanese pounds.

This directive is seen as a reinforcement of last month’s order issued by the Chairperson of the Economic Cluster, Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, who called for stricter adherence to the use of local currency in all transactions.

As Mathiang Joseph reports, authorities say the increasing trend of home money hoarding is weakening the formal banking system, reducing liquidity, and fueling the black market.
