OPINION

TMPT management should carefully revise and review the rules before making judgments against innocent players like Dut Aker, who proudly chose to represent Twic Mayardit Football Team during the Bahr el Ghazal Peace Tournament instead of Aweil East.

Football across the world allows players to make choices based on identity, family background, and personal belonging. Even in Europe and under FIFA regulations, many players choose between their mother’s or father’s nationality when representing teams and countries. Therefore, fairness and consistency should also be applied in our local tournaments.

We have already seen several examples:

1. David Mayen played for Sulluk Tournament.
2. Kuol Nyier played for Tonj East.
3. Guem played for Gogrial East.

Likewise, Dut James chose to play for Twic Mayardit Football Team.

Before rushing to judgment, leaders and management should reflect carefully and apply rules equally to everyone. Football is meant to unite communities, promote peace, and strengthen brotherhood — not to create unnecessary division or selective punishment.

This historical photo captures my great uncle, Dr. Majok Yak Majok, alongside Yisir Arman, Chol Abednego at Bongo training camp in 1983. Dr. Lawrence Majok was not only a brave liberator who fought for the freedom of this country, but also an SPLA/M medical doctor who dedicated his life to saving wounded soldiers during the Liberation struggle.

Dr. Majok Yak Majok, holds an MBBS degree from the University of Alexandria, Egypt. After completing his medical studies, he returned to his home with strong dedication to serve his people. He later joined the Sudan People’s Liberation movement [SPLM/A], where he used his medical skills to treat wounded soldiers and support the Liberation struggle.

On this important day, we salute all fallen heroes and living heroes who sacrifices for the nation.

Happy 16th may, comrades✊🏿🇸🇸

Happy 16th May in honour of the late Maj. Kerubino Kuanyin Bol as a father of South Sudan.

On this historic day in 1983, he fired the first bullet that ignited the SPLA/M liberation struggle and led the famous 105 Battalion with courage and determination. 🫡

As we remember his sacrifice and the contributions of his fellow comrades who gave everything for the freedom and dignity of our people, many young South Sudanese today also reflect with pain and frustration on the hardships citizens continue to endure in the country their fathers fought so hard to liberate.

His legacy, sacrifice, and vision for a better South Sudan must never be forgotten.

Maj. Gen. William Deng Garang Beny is a respected veteran of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) now SSPDF who fought alongside President Salva Kiir during the liberation struggle.

He is widely recognized for creating the historic slogan “SPLA/M OYEE!”, a powerful chant that boosted the morale of SPLA fighters during the war and later became one of the most enduring symbols of the SPLM movement and South Sudanese politics.

Throughout the liberation struggle, Gen. William Deng Garang stood side by side with President Kiir in several major military campaigns and battles as towns were captured during the war. He served as a distinguished commander within the SPLA High Command and participated in key historical battles, including the pivotal conflict in Rumbek, alongside President Kiir and the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior.

Maj. Gen. William Deng Garang retired from active military service in 2012 together with several senior generals. Since then, he has maintained a quiet and humble life away from the public spotlight.

When President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s daughter, Adut Salva Kiir was appointed as Presidential Envoy for Special Programs in 2025, one of the liberation heroes she visited was Maj. Gen. William Deng Garang Beny.

Today, during his speech marking the 43rd anniversary of May 16, President Kiir became emotional after seeing Gen. William Deng once again. The moment brought back memories from the liberation struggle, including the difficult war days when they worked side by side, even pushing vehicles through water together during military operations.

The emotional recognition reflected the deep bond and shared sacrifices between the veteran liberation fighters who endured hardship together throughout the struggle.

His recognition by President Salva Kiir Mayardit today served as a reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by veteran liberation heroes during South Sudan’s long struggle for freedom.
