Ministry of Interior to rescind decision on driverโs license duration
The Ministry of Interior has been directed to reverse a recent decision that reduced the validity of driverโs licenses to one year for South Sudanese nationals and six months for foreigners.
This directive follows a meeting between Deputy Speaker of Parliament Nathaniel Pierino and the Acting Minister of Interior, Hon. Mangar Buong, alongside other key officials, to address public outcry over the controversial order issued by Major General Kon John, the Director General of Traffic Police.
The decision, announced last week, was widely criticized for lacking legal basis and diverging from regional and international best practices.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Hon. Pierino confirmed the resolution:
โWe have resolved that since the order contravenes the best practices of the standard operating procedures and regional practices, the Ministry of Interior has been directed to rescind such order with immediate effect.โ
The Ministry has also been advised to collaborate with the South Sudan Revenue Authority on any adjustments related to the Financial Act 2024/2025 and to expedite the presentation of the Draft South Sudan Traffic Police Bill to Parliament for consideration.
