South Sudanese–American model Anok Yai just shut down the 2025 British Fashion Awards with one of the rawest, most emotional speeches of the night, after winning Model of the Year at only 27, a milestone the industry couldn’t ignore.
She looked the whole world in the eye and told every little Black girl watching:
“Your colour is not a curse… you are worthy, capable, powerful.”
A message that hit deeper than any runway moment ever could.
Her win wasn’t luck, she’s been dominating campaigns, covers and runways since that viral Howard University photo in 2017 turned her life upside down and launched her into global fashion royalty.
