WES GOVERNOR AND UNMISS RENEW COMMITMENT TO PEACE, CIVILIAN SAFETY, AND IDP ASSISTANCE.
Yambio, 31 March 2026 — Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa has reiterated his administration’s dedication to restoring peace and strengthening stability in Western Equatoria State, stressing the importance of justice, reconciliation, and rebuilding trust among communities.
During a meeting with officials from the UNMISS Yambio Field Office, discussions centered on protecting civilians and supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Minga, Lozo, and Kediba in Mundri East County, where recent violence left 22 dead and many displaced.
Governor Rimbasa assured that his government is working tirelessly to bring long-lasting peace, urging communities to reject violence and embrace dialogue. He condemned the recent attacks and announced plans to visit affected areas to engage local leaders, elders, and institutions in reconciliation efforts.
He emphasized that accountability and fair justice are key pillars for restoring confidence and achieving lasting harmony, calling for support toward the safe return of IDPs and strengthened state institutions for better service delivery.
UNMISS officials — Guy Griffin, Charles Okwir, and Emmanuel Dukudani — outlined ongoing efforts to safeguard civilians and assist displaced families. These include support to the National Police Service, IDP verification in Nagero, peacebuilding programs, livelihood projects, climate initiatives, and community dialogues in Tambura, Yambio, and nearby areas.
UNMISS also noted that current cattle movements toward Terekeka provide a chance to promote dialogue between communities in Terekeka and Mundri to prevent further conflict. Upcoming initiatives aim to involve women and other marginalized groups to ensure inclusive and sustainable peace.
The mission reaffirmed continued cooperation with state and national authorities to advance peace, unity, and civilian protection across Western Equatoria State.
