President Kiir Orders Military to Stay Out of Politics, Focus on Constitutional Duties
JUBA, OCTOBER 16, 2025 — President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), has instructed the military to avoid involvement in politics. He emphasized that the army’s main role is to protect the country, its people, and their property.
The announcement came during a leadership handover at the Military Headquarters in Bilpham. Dr. Paul Nang Majok officially took over as the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), succeeding Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol. The President urged the new leadership to continue reforms aimed at strengthening the military.
President Kiir also stressed the importance of discipline and integrity in the army. He called on the new leadership to take care of soldiers’ welfare, serve the nation loyally, and work together to maintain peace, security, and national unity.
Officials at Eagle House said the leadership change is part of ongoing efforts to build a professional and united army. They highlighted that this step supports South Sudan’s transition toward lasting peace, stability, and strong institutions.
