CEPO Calls on Lakes State Government to Address Alcohol-Driven Conflict with Lasting Solutions

Rumbek, Lakes State , 19, May 2026 - The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) is alarmed by the rising cases of violence linked to alcohol consumption across Lakes State. We regret recent conflict between two sections of Aliab and Athuoi in Rumbek East that has claimed two lives and leaves six others with gunshoot injuries in alcohol driven conflict.

Many Reports from Counties of greater Rumbek, Yirol, Cueibet, and surrounding counties indicate that alcohol-related disputes are increasingly leading to fights, injuries, loss of life, and the breakdown of social cohesion. What begins as a drinking incident often escalates into revenge attacks and inter-family conflict, particularly in areas already strained by communal tensions.

CEPO recognizes that alcohol misuse is not only a public health issue but also a driver of insecurity at the community level. The failure to regulate sales, enforce public order, and provide alternatives for youth is allowing this problem to persist.

Therefore; CEPO calls on the Lakes State Government to take the following steps;

1. Enforce existing regulations on the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol, including operating hours for bars and restrictions near markets, schools, and residential areas.
2. Establish a state-level taskforce comprising security organs, traditional leaders, youth, women, and civil society to design and oversee a community-based response to alcohol-driven violence.
3. Invest in prevention and rehabilitation by supporting community sensitization programs and accessible support services for individuals affected by alcohol misuse.
4. Hold accountable those who use alcohol as a pretext for violence, ensuring that criminal acts are handled through formal justice mechanisms, not mob justice or customary retaliation alone.

CEPO also urges traditional leaders, faith leaders, and youth groups to take an active role in discouraging harmful drinking practices and promoting peaceful dispute resolution within their communities.

Addressing alcohol-driven conflict requires political will, consistent enforcement, and community ownership. Temporary crackdowns without long-term prevention will not break the cycle. Lakes State has the opportunity to set an example for how sub-national governments can tackle social drivers of violence before they escalate.

CEPO stands ready to support dialogue, monitoring, and community sensitization efforts aimed at restoring peace and public order in Lakes State. We are urging law enforcement agencies to implement laws without abusing powers of the orders.

The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), Lakes State Branch, has launched a strategic one-day meeting in Rumbek dedicated to strengthening the media’s role in the upcoming electoral process.

, “The Role of Media in Ensuring Free, Fair, and Credible Elections,” the event has convened a diverse group of stakeholders, including media professionals, civil society members, judicial representatives, youth leaders, and the State Electoral Commission.

Opening the session, UJOSS State Coordinator Mr. 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗮𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁 urged journalists to engage deeply, highlighting their essential contribution to the nation’s democratic health.

Representing the State Minister, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗔𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝘂𝗲𝗶 𝗸𝘂𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗹 who also serves as the Director of Radio Rumbek FM 98.0 emphasized that the media serves as the vital “gateway” to ensuring the electoral process remains fair and accessible to all citizens.

The meeting is expected to conclude with a set of professional guidelines and strategies designed to ensure that election reporting across the state is characterized by accuracy, impartiality, and high ethical standards.

Today May 18,2026_ The State Ministry of General Education and Instructions with support from WIDO distributed Bicycles, rainy coats, gum boots,tents and bags to cattle keepers teachers in Yirol East County.
The cattle camps of Tarier and Mayomluok benefited from the support.

Now Lakes State government is advancing the education policy to reach every citizen in the State.

This is in line with SPLM policy of taking town to the people in stead of people to town.
Now Education reaching cattle keepers will send a clear message that nobody is being left behind in education sector.

The leadership of the State Ministry of General Education and instructions under Hon. Nelson Makoi Makur appreciate WIDO for necessary support and urge to continue with good partnership to improve education sector.

APPRECIATION MESSAGE

I am truly happy to share this good news with everyone.

After the unfortunate robbery incident that happened in Konyokonyo, Juba, involving Miss Jackline Yom Ajoh Majok, an Ashesi University student traveling back to Ghana for her studies, most of her important belongings have now been recovered.

Her flight was canceled on Saturday because her passport and documents were missing. Thankfully, through the support of the community, security personnel, friends, and everyone who shared the message, the situation was followed closely.

The thieves were arrested yesterday, and the following items were successfully recovered:

• Passport
• IDs
• Important documents
• Personal belongings

Only the iPad is still missing, and efforts are continuing to trace and recover it.

We are also grateful to announce that her flight will now be rescheduled for this weekend so she can continue her studies in Ghana.

Special thanks to the government and security agencies for taking this situation seriously and responding quickly. Your action brought hope and relief during a very difficult moment.

Today, both Ashesi University and MCF are discussing and appreciating the positive work being done by the security forces and police in South Sudan. Their quick response and commitment helped restore confidence and hope.

Personally, I, Aduot Jok, was deeply disappointed after hearing what happened. At one point, I almost lost hope and even told myself that I would never return to South Sudan again.

But the response shown by the government, police, security agencies, media houses, and ordinary citizens changed my perspective. The arrest of the thieves and the recovery of the important documents showed responsibility, seriousness, and commitment to justice.

Now, I will proudly return home with the degree I earned on 15th May 2026, carrying not only education, but also renewed hope in my country and its people.

I would also like to sincerely thank all media houses, bloggers, friends, and every person who shared the information and helped raise awareness. Your support, fast action, and concern made a big difference.

This shows the power of unity, quick response, and community support.
