MSF teams at Ameth Bek Hospital in the Abyei Special Administrative Area, supported the Ministry of Health (MOH) in responding to a large influx of wounded patients after clashes broke out on 15 September 2026 in Amiet Market, a major trading hub. The hospital received more than 70 injured people with several passing away due to complications.
“The team worked non-stop to keep up with the number of patients coming in,” says Dr. Mayur Kale, MSF Project Coordinator in Abyei. “Many of our patients had severe injuries, mostly gunshot wounds. We also saw injured people with wounds they received while trying to escape the violence, including from burns and road traffic accidents.”
MSF teams worked alongside MOH staff to provide emergency wound and surgical care to those in need.
Before the fighting, Ameth Bek Hospital was already operating at maximum capacity due to the peak of malaria season. As wounded patients continued to arrive, staff had to urgently expand bed capacity.
The violence also triggered displacement as people fled in search of safety.
MSF is deeply concerned about the impact of the violence and about people's ability to reach healthcare and essential services safely.
