Dr. Ting Mayai Criticizes University of Juba Over Degrees Without Skills

National Bureau of Statistics Director General Dr. Ting Mayai has sparked debate after accusing the University of Juba of producing graduates with “degrees without skills.”

Speaking at a public event in Juba on Saturday, Ting praised Vice Chancellor Prof. John Akec for his decisive leadership before criticizing the country’s oldest public university for failing to equip students with practical skills needed in the labour market.

He said South Sudan needs competent graduates to drive national development. His remarks come amid growing concerns over education quality.

In an apparent response, Prof. Akec said speeches alone cannot build a country but development, rule of law, security of property, and contract enforcement will. Professor Akec Wrote on his Facebook wall.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: NCA Approves New Telecom Tariff Adjustment as Phone and Internet Costs Rise
South Sudanese subscribers will pay more for voice calls and internet services starting Friday, June 26, after the National Communication Authority (NCA) approved a phased telecommunications tariff adjustment.
The NCA said the move is necessary to sustain network operations amid rising inflation, the depreciation of the South Sudanese Pound, and the high cost of acquiring foreign currency needed for network equipment, software licenses, and maintenance.
According to the authority, the adjustment is intended to help mobile operators maintain services and prevent network shutdowns, especially in remote areas. The NCA also pledged to closely monitor the implementation and review the measures as economic conditions evolve.
