10 South Sudanese heroes history class barely mentions

South Sudan’s history did not begin with independence in 2011—or even with the SPLM/A. Here are 10 figures whose stories deserve more attention:

King Gbudwe — The Zande king who resisted Mahdist, Belgian and British forces until his death in 1905.

Luigi Adwok B**g — The only South Sudanese to briefly serve as Sudan’s head of state.

Buth Diu — A self-educated politician who demanded Southern rights at the 1947 Juba Conference.

Gordon Muortat Mayen — An Anya Nya leader who pushed for a referendum on Southern Sudan’s future.

Joseph Oduho — A liberation leader who helped establish the University of Juba.

Samuel G*i Tut — An Anya Nya commander who demanded complete independence instead of a “New Sudan.”

William Deng Nhial — A nationalist whose political ideas later influenced John Garang.

Father Saturnino Lohure — A Catholic priest who became a leading voice for Southern freedom.

Aggrey Jaden — One of the first South Sudanese university graduates and an early leader of the independence struggle.

Ariath Makuei — A spiritual leader who united Dinka clans against British colonial rule.
