South Sudan’s population is divided into three “classes.”

10%: Rich and insanely rich. This is the class with access to the national resources. They eat, take more, run the show.

85%: The Survivors, the people. Survival depends on a peanut sandwich amatij, a hot cup of tea and chapati. Some within this 80% sing praises to the zol kabir, the "big shots" for crumbs.

5% - The Conscious, the ones who know that man cannot live by bread alone. They read books. They drink green tea or coffee. They eat sandwiches and chapati for a meal. But they feed the mind first and foremost.

Which category do you belong to??

TWO FLAGS, ONE HEART (Dedicated to Lupita Nyakisumo)

—Tol Abiem

She walks in black, red, green and white
In a vow she holds in sight.
Shield in hand, beads speaks her chest,
Cowrie shells crowning ancestors’ light.

Daughter of the Nile by song,
By blood, story where her roots belong.
She shrank not to fit, nor hid her name
She wore the Nile and grew strong.

The city roars with signs and diesel air,
“MEAT QUALITY!” shouted everywhere.
Yet she moves quiet, rooted like a tree,
A girl knowing home can't lose there.

This is freedom, can't choose or erase,
Yet carries both within one face.
Sankofa within her, “I look to go ahead.”
Ubuntu in smile “I am because of grace.”

She is the seed the soil now keeps,
Watered by the Nile as memory sleeps.
A bridge with legs, daughter of the lands
Borders cut maps, yet never cut deeps.

My heart never bleed forwhat she bears,
My heart stands up and meets her where
Two flags can live inside one chest,
One heart, one people, in the open air.
