COFFIN DISPLAYS ON PUBLIC ROADS BANNED IN JUBA COUNTY

Juba County caretaker commissioner Kalisto Lado has banned the public display of coffins along roads, citing concerns that the practice conflicts with South Sudanese cultural values and traditions.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Friday, Lado directed coffin sellers to keep their products inside shops and use signs or photographs to advertise their businesses instead.

The commissioner said displaying coffins in public could be interpreted as wishing death upon others, stressing that cultural values and community traditions should guide laws and social practices.

71 REPORTED KILLED AS PAKAM–NYANG CLASHES SPREAD TO RUMBEK

RUMBEK, SOUTH SUDAN — At least 71 people have reportedly been killed in deadly clashes in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State, according to a preliminary government report released on Friday, October 9.

The violence began in Nyangkot village on Thursday, where four people were reportedly killed in clashes involving armed youths from the Pakam and Nyang communities. Fighting escalated in Rumbek town early Friday morning, forcing residents to flee to nearby villages for safety.

The reported death toll includes four soldiers, among them a captain and three non-commissioned officers. Authorities have cautioned that the exact number of fatalities and injuries remains unverified.

DECEMBER ELECTIONS MUST PROCEED AS PLANNED, ADUT SALVA KIIR SAYS

South Sudan’s Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programmes, Adut Salva Kiir, has insisted that the country’s general elections must take place on December 22, 2026, declaring that any further extension or adjustment of the electoral timetable is not up for discussion.

Speaking in Juba on Friday at the end of a two-week inter-party dialogue, Adut called on political parties and government institutions to shift their focus from discussions to concrete action to ensure the elections are held as scheduled.

She highlighted legal reforms, logistics, security arrangements and continued political dialogue as critical areas requiring urgent attention. She also urged the National Elections Commission to accelerate preparations and security agencies to ensure voters are protected.

President Salva Kiir launched the dialogue on September 24 as part of efforts to build political consensus ahead of South Sudan’s first general elections since independence in 2011.

However, opposition groups have raised concerns about the inclusiveness of the process, pointing to ongoing political divisions and the continued detention and trial of former First Vice-President Riek Machar.

Despite the government’s firm position, questions remain over the country’s security situation, electoral preparedness and ability to conduct credible elections within the remaining timeframe.
