One of the greatest barriers to gender equality in South Sudan is the continued undervaluing of girls' education.
In some communities, a girl is viewed as a source of wealth through marriage rather than as a future leader, professional, entrepreneur, or change-maker.
As a result, many girls are denied the opportunity to pursue their education and achieve their dreams. When a girl's education is sacrificed, society loses her potential contributions to development, peace, and progress.
Beyond harmful cultural perceptions, conflict and poverty have also had devastating effects on girls' access to education. Years of instability have disrupted learning, displaced families, and weakened support systems.
Many bright and talented girls are unable to continue their studies simply because they cannot afford school fees or because the people who once supported them were affected by conflict.
Yet despite these challenges, countless girls across South Sudan remain determined to learn. They continue to dream of becoming teachers, doctors, lawyers, peacebuilders, and leaders. What they need is opportunity, support, and people willing to believe in their potential.
As a member of the UNDP Student Ambassador Programme and a beneficiary of the PASS USA, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of educational support.
PASS has stepped in to support many vulnerable students, especially girls, by helping them access education when financial barriers would otherwise force them to abandon their studies.
My own educational journey has been strengthened through this support, and I know many other young women whose lives have been changed because someone chose to invest in their future.
Education is not an expense; it is an investment. When we educate a girl, we empower a family, strengthen a community, and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous nation.
I therefore encourage individuals, organizations, and well-wishers to support initiatives such as PASS that are committed to ensuring that deserving girls are not left behind because of poverty or circumstances beyond their control.
Together, we can help more girls stay in school, achieve their dreams, and become the leaders our communities need.
