Canada Plans to End Peacekeeping Missions in South Sudan by Mid 2027

Canada’s Department of National Defence is set to scale back its military presence in Africa as part of a broader restructuring of its international military deployments.

Under the planned changes, Canada intends to conclude its operations in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo by mid-2027, while also reducing the size of its deployment in Egypt.

The move forms part of Canada’s wider effort to realign its military resources and international commitments amid changes to its global defence priorities.

The planned withdrawal is expected to mark a significant shift in Canada’s peacekeeping and security engagement in Africa, including its contribution to international efforts supporting peace and stability in South Sudan.

Climate Smart Agriculture Helps Flood Affected Communities Build Resilience in Rubkona

Flood affected communities in Rubkona County are adopting innovative climate smart agricultural practices to strengthen food security and livelihoods amid prolonged flooding.

With funding from the Embassy of Canada to South Sudan, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is supporting vulnerable households through training in floating-garden vegetable production.

As persistent flooding limits access to conventional farmland, floating gardens provide an innovative alternative, enabling communities to produce nutritious vegetables despite challenging environmental conditions.

The initiative is helping households improve food and nutrition security, diversify livelihoods, generate income, and strengthen their resilience to recurring climate related shocks.

The intervention highlights the growing importance of climate smart agriculture in supporting vulnerable communities and sustaining food production in flood-prone areas of South Sudan.

SSNBS Joins Regional Workshop on Mutual Recognition Agreements

The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) is participating in a two-day Regional Technical Workshop on Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) taking place in Nairobi, Kenya.

The workshop brings together representatives from IGAD Member States and key partners to examine practical approaches to implementing MRAs under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Discussions are focusing on strengthening regional trade, reducing technical barriers to trade, and facilitating the efficient movement of goods across borders.

The engagement provides an opportunity for South Sudan and other IGAD member states to strengthen cooperation and advance trade facilitation efforts in support of regional economic integration.

Amanah Insurance Begins Surplus Payouts to Eligible Policyholders

Amanah Insurance has commenced the distribution of surplus payouts to eligible policyholders following its annual surplus-sharing event held earlier this week in Juba.

The company says the payouts are part of its Takaful insurance model, which allows eligible policyholders to share in the remaining balance of the common risk fund after claims and other financial obligations have been settled. Amanah Insurance says the initiative reflects its commitment to transparency, mutual benefit and the principles underpinning Takaful insurance.
