Guinea-Bissau’s military has named a new interim leader for a one year period following a coup that removed the country’s president as election results were being finalized.

General Horta Nta Na Man was sworn in on Thursday at the military headquarters after being selected to head the High Command. The announcement came a day after soldiers seized power and detained the president, deepening political uncertainty in the West African nation.

During the brief ceremony, General Na Man confirmed his new role, stating, “I have just been sworn in to lead the High Command,” as witnessed by AFP journalists.

Authorities have not yet released details on the transition plan or the timetable for restoring constitutional order.

Recent intercommunal clashes, cattle-related incidents, and reports of aerial bombardments in Ulang and Baliet counties of Upper Nile State have resulted in civilian casualties, injuries, and the displacement of families.

UNMISS is calling on all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and support efforts toward peace and stability.
