On Tuesday, South Sudanese youth gathered in Juba to commemorate International Youth Day 2025, under the theme: “Youth Innovation for a Sustainable Future,” in an impressive display of solidarity and shared purpose.

The event, organized by the Eden Foundation in partnership with Scenius Hub and Amatel Africa, brought together government representatives, students, civil society organizations, and young innovators to reflect on the challenges facing youth and explore pathways toward national unity, development, and sustainability.

Speaking at the event, Yar Telar Deng, Member of Parliament representing Yirol West County in the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (NTLA), called on South Sudanese youth to look beyond tribal and political affiliations and work collectively to address the country’s pressing issues.

Peter Lemmy Noka, Program Manager at the Eve Organization for Women Development, underlined the need for the government to address these delays in order to ensure that students transition smoothly into higher education.

Dwatuka Ngoni, Representative of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, highlighted the urgent need to empower young people to take the lead in sustainability and environmental action.

However, Abul Majur, Executive Director of the Eden Foundation, emphasized the significance of the event as a platform for youth to reconnect, collaborate, and be inspired toward a common vision for peace and progress.

The commemoration concluded with a call for investment in youth-led solutions, innovation hubs, and national frameworks that prioritize the role of young people in peacebuilding, governance, and sustainable development.

International Youth Day was founded in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly. It was established following a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 1998). It's observed every year on August 12 to raise awareness about issues affecting young people around the world and to celebrate their contributions to society.

Unity State: SPLA-IO releases RSF commander Jabril after year-long detention

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) has released Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) commander Maj. Gen. Jabril Tap after more than a year in detention at an SPLA-IO base in Tong, Rubkona County, Unity State.

The commander was reportedly freed due to deteriorating health conditions and mounting pressure from his family on local authorities.

Tap was arrested on May 13, 2024, at the Sudan–South Sudan border, accused by SPLA-IO of supporting RSF operations along the contested frontier near Tong village, Rubkona.

Speaking to King Media on Monday, Kerbino Yai Pazale, SPLA-IO’s Deputy Spokesperson in Unity State, confirmed Tap’s release, noting that it was due to his health conditions.

“It’s very true, he was arrested since May last year because he was supporting the military rapid forces. At the border of Sudan and South Sudan. We decided to release him because he no longer has forces that could pose a threat or launch any attacks. He was handed over to his family and is now in Rubkona town with relatives and friends,” he stated.

However, Gen. Tap revealed that he was released on Friday through the intervention of the Governor of Unity State, after his family raised the issue with the state leadership.

“When I know that they want to take me back to Tong village. I inform my family members to go to Governor Riek Biem Top to inform him and he immediately directed the security personnel to go directly to SPLA-IO general in Tong and through the understanding they have, they released me,” he emphasized.

Brethren Church donates non-food items to Mayom, Abiemnom residents

The Church of the Brethren, in collaboration with Brethren Global Services (BGS), on Monday distributed essential nonfood relief items to thousands of displaced families in Mayom County of Unity State and Abiemnom County of the Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA).

The distribution reached 4,500 households, including 2,500 in Nortikur Payam in Mayom, which benefitted 17,500 people, and 2,000 in Abiemnom, that benefited 11,000 people, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 30,500.

Beneficiaries included individuals displaced by the recent violent conflict in Abiemnom, as well as those ravaged by severe flooding in Mayom County.

The items supplied were blankets, mosquito nets, buckets, mats, cooking pots (Sufuria), and soaps.

In an interview with King Media, Kerbino Pow, Church of the Brethren’s Program Manager, said the distribution of the items aimed at helping communities navigate the challenges of the rainy season.

He reaffirmed the organization's long-term commitment to aiding communities across the country.

“This initiative is part of our continued mission to support vulnerable people, especially those affected by conflict and natural disasters. By distributing these items in Nortikur and Abiemnom, we’re showing our solidarity with the displaced. This is not a one-time effort, we will continue to reach out to affected communities across other states as well,” Pow stated.

Freight Forwarders pledge support to SSNBS in crackdown on substandard goods

The leadership of the South Sudan Freight Forwarders Association (SSFFA), has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) in clamping down on the growing menace of substandard and smuggled food products into the country.

This pledge came during a high-level courtesy visit by the SSFFA executive team, led by the institution's president, Mr. Deng Daniel, to Ms. Gloria Nyoka, Executive Director of SSNBS, on Monday in Juba.

The meeting, while ceremonial on the surface, revealed a deepening strategic alliance between two of the nation's most critical institutions in the fight for food safety and public health.
