The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) strongly
condemns an attack on a humanitarian convoy that was being escorted by peacekeepers in Aniydi Payam of Bor South County of Jonglei State.
As the convoy passed through Macdit, 60 kilometres from Bor town, a group of armed men emerged from the bushes and one opened fire on the UN vehicles. An UNMISS vehicle was damaged, but fortunately there were no casualties. UNMISS peacekeepers returned fire and repelled the attackers.
“This attack threatened the lives of humanitarians delivering vital assistance to communities in need as well as peacekeepers providing protection. It is utterly unacceptable,” said Nicholas
Haysom, the Secretary General’s Special Representative to South Sudan and head of UNMISS.
“We appreciate the response of the Government of Jonglei State who rapidly dispatched a joint protection team of local forces to the location to provide support. It is important that a thorough investigation takes place and that the perpetrators are held accountable,” he said.

More than 30 000 displaced people have voluntarily returned to Kajo-Keji County in Central Equatoria State since the beginning of this year.
The returnees, who are mostly women and children, were registered by the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission.
The commissioner of Kajo Keji, Phanuel Dumo says the influx has put a strain on the resources and services available.
The commissioner is appealing to humanitarian partners to extend assistance in the form of food, non-food items, seeds and farming tools.
“People are coming in massive number and now the NGO’s on the ground are making the assessment," said Dumo, "The office of South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission SSRRC has got all the data. It is now upon our authority to say these people should be given at least something like food as they continue coming so that the beginning of the rainy season they will be given the tools, seeds, and other humanitarian needs."

The Bank of South Sudan continues to tighten restrictions on informal foreign exchange dealers.
Bank Governor James Alic Garang says an operation to limit their operations in specific locations of Juba is an ongoing process.
He says it will ultimately lead to the criminalization of black-market dealers.
The bank governor is encouraging forex dealers to legalize their businesses and follow the guidelines that have been provided by the Central Bank.
"We are encouraging them to move to the next phase, which is get registered, find shops, operate formally," said Garang, "Let me just foretell what is going to come, we have the laws of the land no one will be allowed to sell on the street."
In December, the Central Bank instructed all informal forex dealers to form umbrella associations or organise themselves into structured groups.
They were also directed to operate in permanent structures in four designated locations, apply for registration from the Central Bank and pay taxes to the government.
The aim is to terminate parallel forex markets, rein in on money laundering activities and address the banking sector’s weaknesses.
