Akol Paul says South Sudanese can rely on traditional medicine if hospitals close

SPLM Secretary General Dr. Akol Paul said communities may turn to traditional remedies if international funding cuts lead to the closure of some village hospitals.

Speaking during an expanded SPLM meeting in Central Equatoria State, Akol recalled surviving a severe malaria infection in 1998 in Madubai, Maridi, by chewing bitter tree roots recommended by an elderly woman.

“An international official told me that because they are stopping funding, our village hospitals would close,” he said. “I survived a deadly case of malaria by chewing the bitter roots of a tree an old woman showed me.”
