BREAKING: Dr. Riek says Kiir has no powers to dismiss him from SPLM political Bareau and the party.
Dr. Riek machar, the South Sudan’s First Vice President and leader of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) have rejected the decision by the SPLM political bureau to invalidate his membership from the SPLM highest wing.
Last week, the SPLM Political Bureau called a meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir and resolves to remove Machar as first deputy chair of the SPLM party on the notion that Dr. Riek has formed his own political party.
In the same meeting, SPLM party removed Pagan Amum, the former secretary-general of the party and invalidated his membership claiming the similar reason to that of Dr. Riek, which the political bureau says it contradicts the party constitution.
According to the statement obtained from Sudans post by Juba TV, Dr. Riek fully rejected the decision of the SPLM political bureau meeting, saying the SPLM-IG is a faction just like the SPLM-IO and the Real SPLM and therefore has no powers to remove other leaders from the other factions.
“We want to categorically state that none of these factions can claim being the SPLM, as such no faction can dismiss any member of the other factions from SPLM,” Dr. Riek said.
On Thursday of last week, the SPLM Political Bureau, the party's highest organization consisting of 25 senior members dismissed Dr. Riek and Comrade Pagan Amuom from the SPLM party and its Bureau.
Dr. Riek was the deputy chairman of the SPLM and Cde. Pagan was a Secretary General, before the civil war broke out in 2013. After, the Civil War, Dr. Riek formed the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement in Opposition, SPLM-IO and became the chairman.
While, Pagan, got arrested and became a political detainee with some of the members of SPLM Liberation council, later release and sent to exile. Pagan is currently the chairman of Real Sudan People's Liberation Movement, R-SPLM which is now in coalition with SSUF and NAS under SSOMA.
SSOMA is now in pending negotiations with Government of South Sudan in Rome.
