The Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Gabriel Bol Deng, returned to Juba on Sunday, September 27,, following a short medical review trip to Kenya.
He was received at the airport by the Acting Secretary General of the Commission, Mr. Ahon Malou Lueth.
Gabriel Bol sustained a fracture to his right ankle and serious injuries to his right knee on July 26, 2026, when the driver of a campaign caravan suddenly applied the brakes, accidentally ejecting him from the vehicle.
The incident occurred while Bol was leading the NEC Secretariat during the “Walk to Democracy” campaign, an initiative aimed at sensitizing eligible voters in the suburbs of Juba ahead of the official launch of civic and voter education, which took place on July 27, 2026, at the NEC Headquarters.
Following the accident, Bol was referred to Nairobi for further orthopaedic treatment. Despite the injuries, he has continued discharging his official duties since the accident occurred.
On September 21, 2026, following his appointment as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission on September 15, Gabriel Bol announced the approval of the Voter Registration Forms for the December 2026 General Elections. Mr. Ahon Malou Lueth was also appointed Acting Secretary General of the Commission.
During a recent media advisory, the NEC Chairperson urged election stakeholders to actively play their respective roles in supporting preparations for the December 2026 polls.
Looking ahead, the Commission will soon announce voter registration date after assessing voter registration centres and other relevant electoral activities through NEC’s official communication channels.
The National Elections Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring free, fair, credible and independent elections in the country, in accordance with the National Elections Act, as amended.
