Claims of Telecom Tariff Reduction in South Sudan Remain Unverified
By Ngor Deng Matem
Recent messages circulating on social media suggesting that telecom tariffs in South Sudan have been reduced following the appointment of the new Minister of Information, Telecommunications and Postal Services have raised public interest. However, a closer review indicates that these claims lack verification.
Screenshots shared online show telecom service features allegedly reflecting current tariffs, but they do not provide proof of previous charges for voice calls or internet bundles. Historically, whenever telecom companies adjusted their charges, they publicly announced the changes along with explanations for the increases. Observers, me included note that a similar announcement would be expected if any reductions had occurred.
South Sudan currently has three major telecom networks:
1. MTN
2. Zain
3. And the locally owned Digitel.
As of now, none of these companies have confirmed any reduction in their tariffs. As a member of Fact-checkers and industry professionals, I have emphasized that without official announcements or documented comparisons, there is no evidence supporting claims of tariff reductions.
It is worth noting that prior to his ministerial appointment, Ateny Wek, now Minister of Information, Telecommunications and Postal Services, publicly expressed concern over the high cost of telecom services in South Sudan, comparing them unfavorably to other countries. At the time, his statements were part of efforts to lobby for government office.
Until official communication is made by telecom providers, claims of reduced tariffs remain unverified and should be treated with caution.
