South Sudan kickboxing champion Majok Gau appeals for support amid financial struggles
South Sudanese kickboxing champion Majok Gau Juwiir is appealing for support as he faces severe financial difficulties, including approximately six months of unpaid rent and a lack of stable income, despite his record of representing the country in national and international competitions.
Speaking to Hot in Juba, Majok said he has made several attempts to seek assistance from government officials but has struggled to gain access to key decision-makers who could potentially help him find opportunities to use his skills professionally.
Majok, who also has a military background, believes his experience in kickboxing and physical fitness could be useful in training security personnel, including special forces and presidential protection units. He specifically appealed to government officials, including Mike Mike, to give him an opportunity to contribute his expertise.
“I am a young person who believes in my own potential. I believe having the opportunity to train special forces would assist me financially while also giving me a chance to share my skills with other young people,” Majok said.
He explained that his main source of income had previously come from providing physical fitness training to employees of international non-governmental organisations. However, funding cuts and the departure of many of the people he trained from South Sudan left him without a reliable source of income.
His current financial difficulties come despite an impressive record in kickboxing. Over the years, Majok has won seven major championship titles across kickboxing, Muay Thai, mixed martial arts and boxing.
His championship journey began in 2018, when he won the World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) South Sudan Championship. He went on to claim the World Muay Thai Organization (WMO) Continental Championship in 2022, followed by the WMO International Championship in 2023.
