🔴BREAKING NEWS: South Sudan Appoints New Chief Justice Amidst Reform Push

President Salva Kiir has appointed Dr. Benjamin Baak Deng as the new Chief Justice, replacing Justice Chan Reec Madut, who served since independence in 2011. This major shake-up comes as the country moves to reform its troubled judiciary.

Dr. Baak, a legal expert and member of the Judicial Reform Committee under the 2018 peace deal, is expected to lead changes aimed at restoring trust in the legal system. The committee has already proposed key reforms, including the creation of an independent Constitutional Court.

Politician Dr. Lam Akol praised the move, calling Baak’s appointment “a step toward transparency.” Human rights lawyer Godfrey Victor echoed this, calling the change “long overdue” as citizens grow frustrated with justice delays and weak court enforcement.

With a PhD in international environmental law and decades of experience, Dr. Baak's leadership could mark a new era for justice in South Sudan.

Violent Attack in Tonj East’s Jalwau Area Leaves Villages Destroyed and Hundreds Displaced

Wunlit, South Sudan – May 30, 2025

A violent and coordinated attack carried out by armed youth from the Luacjang community between May 28 and 29 has devastated the Jalwau area in Tonj East County, leaving numerous casualties and forcing hundreds to flee their homes.

Eyewitnesses reported that key community facilities, including the Wunlit Payam market and the Payam Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC), were deliberately set on fire alongside several villages. The destruction has left many residents homeless and without access to basic services.

The attack resulted in multiple injuries—some severe—but medical assistance remains virtually inaccessible due to the destruction of the only local health center. Survivors in need of urgent care now face an alarming lack of medical support.

In addition to the human toll, large numbers of cattle and goats were looted during the assault, stripping families of their primary sources of livelihood and further worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Attempts to verify the full scale of casualties have been unsuccessful, as local authorities have yet to release an official statement or respond to repeated inquiries.

The community is now calling for immediate humanitarian aid and swift government intervention to restore order and prevent further bloodshed in the region. Peace actors are also being urged to step in and address the growing insecurity threatening the stability of Tonj East.
