Former Vice President James Wani Igga, Kuol Manyang Juuk, and Awet Akot Placed Under House Arrest

In a dramatic political development, President Salva Kiir has reportedly removed all his deputies from the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party as of yesterday.

This morning, tight security was deployed across key locations in Juba, with multiple sources confirming that James Wani Igga, Kuol Manyang Juuk, and Awet Akot have been placed under house arrest and denied movement.

The reasons behind the sweeping purge remain unclear, but tensions within the SPLM leadership have been simmering in recent weeks. The latest moves mark a significant escalation in South Sudan’s internal power dynamics.

Why Nuer are always appointed for external security and Dinka for internal security?

Lt. General Thoi Chany Reat is a professional and a dignified official. He should, however, carefully examine the reason(s) behind his eleventh hour appointment as the Director General of the External Security Bureau. And why not appoint him as the Director General of the Internal Security Bureau? What is the deal that President Salva Kiir always appoints a Dinka as the DG of the Internal Security Bureau and a Nuer as the DG of the External Security Bureau? Of course, there are many reasons which I may not discuss here. But one possible reason for putting a Nuer always as the head of the external security is to also use him to facilitate a dirty job externally. The public may recall that it was the former DG for External Security Bureau, Lt. General. Thomas Duoth Guet, a Nuer, who was blamed for using his external security communications and staff to kidnap some officials of the SPLM-IO from east African countries, and particularly from Kenya. Some of them were extrajudicially murdered in South Sudan. Does Salva Kiir, Taban Deng, Bol Mel, et al, think of the same to use Lt. General Thoi Chany in case his predecessor, General Simon Yien Makuach, failed to do it? I hope Thoi will not accept to be used for that kidnapping business!

The country’s cholera outbreak in South Sudan has killed nearly 1,000 people and has infected close to 50,000, according to Dr. Aggrey Kaijuka Bategereza, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in the country. Many more cases are likely unreported. Speaking in Juba on Thursday, he said that "(c)holera is now present in more than 40 of South Sudan’s 79 counties. We have already vaccinated close to 5 million people." Cholera, which is an acute illness caused by contaminated food or water, remains a global health threat linked to poor sanitation and inequality.
