University of Bahr el Ghazal to Reopen for First and Final Year Students in Two Weeks

The University of Bahr el Ghazal will reopen in two weeks, only for first and final-year students, after being closed for two months due to a student strike over tuition fee increases.

Vice Chancellor Professor Erneo Uchi announced that the registration will begin on Monday, July 28, 2025, and lectures will start on August 4, 2025. He mentioned that this decision is part of a practical strategy to manage the situation following the strike in May.

Professor Uchi explained that reopening for just first- and final-year students is a way to ensure order, as these groups are eager to continue their studies and graduate. He noted that if all goes well, other classes could resume in a few months.

Regarding the tuition fees, the Vice Chancellor stated that the costs at the University of Bahr el Ghazal are lower than those in the region. Students will need to pay at least 50% of the new tuition fees along with a university development fund.

For example, a student in the College of Medicine will have to pay about one million South Sudanese pounds, equivalent to $200, while in Uganda, medical students may pay between $2,000 and $3,000.

Professor Uchi emphasized that these fees are necessary for the university's sustainability, considering the ongoing economic pressures on families.

The University of Bahr el Ghazal offers various courses, including medicine, veterinary science, nursing, education, and public health.
