Videos showing the sea dramatically pulling away from the coastline in ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น ๐ฃ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฎ, ๐๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ, have gone viral across TikTok, YouTube and Facebook, with some posts falsely claiming that the Atlantic Ocean had suddenly disappeared.
The videos are genuine, but the claim that the sea โdried upโ or disappeared is false.
The unusual scene was caused by a ๐ง๐ฒ๐บ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ, which exposed a large rocky formation known as ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ฎ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ผ near the ๐ฃ๐๐ป๐๐ฎ ๐ ๐ผ๐ด๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ. The formation normally remains submerged, making its sudden appearance look like a new island.
The retreat was linked to a combination of ๐น๐ผ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ. This type of temporary lowering of coastal water levels is known as wind setdown or a meteorological low tide.
