South Sudan reaffirms sovereignty, national ownership and commitment to elections
South Sudan has welcomed the continued support of international partners, including the United States, Japan, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada, in promoting peace, stability and development. However, the government stresses that international partnership must respect South Sudan’s sovereignty and allow South Sudanese institutions and citizens to determine the country’s political future. The implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement remains important, but the country says the peace process should lead toward elections rather than an indefinite transition.
South Sudan further emphasizes that political, judicial, security and economic reforms must be led by national institutions and supported through dialogue. Judicial processes should be allowed to follow due process without external interference, while security-sector reform should focus on building a professional, unified and nationally representative security system. The country also recognizes the need for stronger public financial management, transparency and accountability, with international partners encouraged to support capacity-building and investment without replacing national institutions.
South Sudan remains committed to peace, dialogue, reform and democracy, while maintaining that national ownership must remain at the centre of the process. International engagement is welcomed on the basis of mutual respect and partnership, but the country maintains that its people must have the opportunity to freely choose their leaders and determine their future. The statement concludes that the true measure of peace is not the length of the transition, but the ability of South Sudan to establish a stable democratic political order through the sovereign will of its people.
