Ethiopia has begun construction of what officials describe as Africa's largest airport, a $12.5 billion mega-project led by Ethiopian Airlines in the town of Bishoftu , about 45 km southeast of Addis Ababa.

Scheduled for completion in 2030, Bishoftu International Airport will feature four runways, parking space for 270 aircraft, and the capacity to handle up to 110 million passengers annually—more than four times the capacity of Ethiopia's current main airport.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali said the new airport will become the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa's history, helping Ethiopia meet rapidly growing air traffic demand.

Ethiopian Airlines will fund about 30% of the project, with the remainder financed by international lenders, including the African Development Bank, which has pledged $500 million and is leading broader fundraising efforts. Immediate Reversal Demanded: International Donors Denounce SPLM/A-IO Vehicle Confiscation.

The Embassies of Canada, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States condemn a reported order issued by SPLM/A-IO Major General John Luk Bayak in northern Jonglei State for humanitarian organizations to surrender their vehicles.

This order is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian principles and places assistance workers in harm’s way. We call for an immediate reversal of this order and the return of any assets seized.

No party or individual in South Sudan has the right to confiscate assets provided by our government to assistance implementing partners in support of our effort to provide life-saving assistance to South Sudanese in need.
