The Church That Sheaves
Priestly Silver Jubilee Celebration of Rev. Fr. Otto.
Kapoeta Sunday, 2026 – Diocese of Torit
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, on this holy Sunday, the Lord’s Day, we gather as one family of God to celebrate not only the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, but also a living sign of His resurrection at work among us: 25 years of priestly service of our beloved Rev. Fr. Otto Kapoeta.
We call this celebration “The Church That Sheaves.”
For twenty-five years, Fr. Otto has gone out with the seed of the Gospel in his hands, sowing hope in times of war, planting faith in times of doubt, and watering communities with the sacraments of mercy and love. Like the sower in the parable, he has walked dusty roads, sat under trees with catechumens, stood at the altar with trembling hands, and carried the burdens of his people before the Lord.
Today we see the harvest.
We see young men and women discerning vocations because they met Christ through his witness.
We see families reconciled because he refused to give up on them.
We see parishes standing firm in faith because he taught us that the Church is not built on buildings, but on living stones—you and me.
We see a Church that sheaves, a Church that gathers the fruits of sacrifice, prayer, and perseverance.
This Jubilee is not about one man alone. It is about God’s faithfulness. It is about a Church that refuses to be broken, a people who refuse to forget where they came from. We remember the days of the liberation struggle, when Mass was said under trees and the Word of God was the only weapon that gave us courage. Fr. Otto walked that road with us, and today he still walks it—now in the struggle for peace, reconciliation, and the dignity of every South Sudanese.
On this Sunday, the Day of the Lord, we thank God for the gift of his priesthood. We thank Fr. Otto for saying “yes” 25 years ago, and for saying “yes” again every single morning when he rose to serve. We also renew our own “yes” to the Church. For a priest is not a priest for himself, but for you, and you are not the Church for yourselves, but for the world.
To our brothers and sisters who have joined the Church recently, welcome. The harvest is large, and there is room for all who come with sincere hearts to serve. Let us build together, honoring those who carried the seed before us, and working side by side so that no one is pushed out, but all are brought in.
As we celebrate the Eucharist today, let us lift our voices with the Psalmist: “Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” Ps 126:5-6
May this Silver Jubilee be a moment of thanksgiving, healing, and renewal for our Diocese, for Eastern Equatoria, and for the whole Church in South Sudan.
Fr. Otto, on behalf of all of us: Ad multos annos!
May God bless you, strengthen you, and keep you faithful to the end!
