BREAKING NEWS: South Sudan Conflict Escalates as Airstrikes Intensify, United Nations Warns
The humanitarian situation in South Sudan is rapidly deteriorating, with a sharp rise in casualties from airstrikes and ground fighting, aid agencies have warned the UN.
A senior official from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says the use of aircraft and barrel bombs has intensified, displacing nearly half a million people. So far in 2025, almost 1,000 weapon-wounded patients have been treated in ICRC-supported hospitals — the highest figure since 2018.
The conflict is now affecting 7 out of 10 states, while 1.2 million refugees from Sudan have added to the crisis. Funding for humanitarian aid is also declining sharply, with 57% of the population facing food insecurity.
The possible downsizing of the UN peacekeeping mission, UNMISS, could further weaken civilian protection and humanitarian access.
A worsening crisis with shrinking support.
