the Election Statement by the Khartoum regime, the residents of Abyei have closed the borders between Sudan and South Sudan.

On Tuesday morning, citizens of the Abyei Administrative Area blocked the primary border crossings between South Sudan and Sudan in protest of a Khartoum declaration on the area's elections.

The protest was sparked by a statement from the Sudanese government saying that Abyei residents would not be allowed to participate in the South Sudan general elections in December 2026.

The demonstrations demonstrate that the populace of Abyei rejects Khartoum's assertion and wants the right to participate in the election. The demonstration organizers claimed that Khartoum's stance was unlawful and in violation of the Abyei people's right to self-determination.

According to the community, Abyei has a long history with South Sudan and must be allowed to vote in the elections.

One of the protest leaders said that we would not let Khartoum rule our lives.

Many individuals are currently worried about the trade and security of the area, thus the closing of the borders has halted all commercial and human transit between Sudan and South Sudan.

In an effort to increase non-oil revenue and bolster public finances, the High-Level Ministerial Committee on Economic Reforms has eliminated all non-statutory tax exemptions.

In accordance with orders from President Salva Kiir, the initiative aims to increase transparency, lessen reliance on oil money, and promote the prompt payment of public workers' salaries and other government programs.

On behalf of the committee, Minister of Public Service and Human Resource Development Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth lauded Commissioner General Mun Deng Acuet of the South Sudan Revenue Authority for his efforts to carry out the changes at the Nimule border crossing.

SPLM-IO under Par Kuol denies endorsing President Kiir for 2026 Elections.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement in Opposition which was recently registered as IO party under Stephen Par Kuol has rejected the report that they endorsed President Salva Kiir as candidate for the upcoming election.

In a statement to the Media Par group said no candidate has been endorsed citing that it is National Convention meeting that can decide.

The response followed series of online report that they have endorsed President Salva Kiir of SPLM as candidate for upcoming election.

The group rejected the online report calling it a propaganda.

“The SPLM-IO Interim Leadership, under the stewardship of Hon. Stephen Par Kuol, wishes to categorically clarify that this information is false and does not reflect the position of the Party,” the statement pary read.

According to the party, the Interim Leadership has not announced any electoral strategy nor endorsed any candidate for the presidency or any other elective office.

The community reiterated its unwavering stance that Abyei is historically and culturally part of South Sudan, demanding that their right to vote in South Sudan’s December 2026 polls be respected.

"We will not allow Khartoum to dictate our political future. Our alignment is with South Sudan, and we will participate in the upcoming democratic exercise," said one of the protest organizers.

The border blockade has halted commercial and human traffic between the two nations, raising concerns over regional trade and security.

UPDATE: Family Shares New Details on the Shooting of 15-Year-Old Alek Ayuel Akuei.

I have just received a call from one of the relatives who witnessed the shooting.

At around 9:00 p.m., 15-year-old Alek Ayuel Akuei was sent to a nearby shop to buy diapers for a baby. After buying the diapers, she was walking back home when she was shot, reportedly in the neck, and collapsed to the ground. According to the family, she lost a lot of blood before she was rushed to the hospital.

According to the relative, the man who shot her walked over and stood next to her as she lay on the ground. The incident was witnessed by several relatives who were sitting outside the family gate. When one of the female relatives rushed to the scene and asked him why he had shot the girl, he reportedly replied, “I just shot her.”

The suspect is said to be from Apuk Giir Thiik. According to the family, he previously stayed at the home of Gen. Gregory Deng Kuac, President Salva Kiir’s brother-in-law, and at the time of the incident was reportedly staying at one of President Kiir’s residences.

After the shooting, the suspect allegedly tried to force his way into the family’s house, but people quickly shut the gate. He also reportedly tried to shoot the shopkeeper where Alek had bought the diapers, but the Sudanese shopkeeper quickly closed his shop.

Alek’s maternal uncle, an SSPDF captain, had just returned from operations around Yei. According to relatives, he restrained himself from taking the law into his own hands, but kept crying, asking how this could happen to his family while he was in the bush defending the country.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene and later surrendered to Sector 4 of the Tiger Division. According to the family, there are also unconfirmed rumors that Mama Ayendit, the First Lady ordered his release.

Ceremonial cheques, no cash: ICT ministry award winners still waiting

More than two months after South Sudan’s Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services awarded journalists and media professionals cash prizes worth between SSP 5 million and SSP 8 million, several recipients say they have yet to receive the promised payments.

The awards were presented during the ministry’s Media Fraternity Dinner on May 9, 2026, in Juba, where journalists, broadcasters, engineers, and media practitioners from various outlets were recognized for their contributions to the country’s media industry. During the ceremony, recipients were handed oversized ceremonial cheques showing the value of their awards.

Awardees who spoke to Hot in Juba said the promised cash has not been disbursed more than two months later. One recipient, who requested anonymity said repeated follow-ups have yielded the same response from organizers.

“They keep saying they are trying to secure the cash,” the recipient said.

Another awardee said the ceremonial cheque could not be redeemed, adding that winners are still waiting for the ministry to fulfill its pledge.

The ceremony attracted attention after South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) won the highest number(4) of awards across the different categories. Organizers also clarified that the awards were intended to recognize service and contribution to South Sudan’s media industry, rather than being based on a competitive merit process.

The promised prizes ranged from SSP 5 million to SSP 8 million, depending on the award category. Several recipients say they remain hopeful the ministry will honor its commitment.

The Government of Sudan 🇸🇩 has rejected South Sudan’s decision to include the disputed Abyei Administrative Area among the geographical constituencies approved for the country’s general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said South Sudan’s National Electoral Commission had approved 102 geographical constituencies, including 12 in Warrap State, with Abyei listed among them.

Sudan described the inclusion of Abyei as a violation of the 2005 Abyei Protocol and the 2011 Agreement on Temporary Security and Administrative Arrangements for the Abyei Area.

Khartoum urged South Sudan to comply with existing agreements between the two countries and called for the final status of Abyei to be resolved peacefully through negotiations.

The Sudanese government also called on the United Nations, regional and international organizations, and countries involved in supporting the Abyei agreements to reject what it described as unilateral actions outside the established legal framework.

Sudan reaffirmed its commitment to good relations with South Sudan while maintaining that it would uphold its legal rights under agreements signed by the two countries.

Abyei remains a disputed territory claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan, with its final political status yet to be resolved.
