South Sudan Announces Major Currency Reform to Boost Economy
The Government of South Sudan has officially announced plans to introduce a new series of banknotes in a bold move aimed at stabilizing the economy and restoring the value of the South Sudanese Pound.
According to the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mabiordit, the decision follows a comprehensive review of the country’s economic policies and ongoing challenges affecting the national currency. The reform is expected to improve cash circulation and address persistent inflation.
Under the proposed changes, the new denominations will include SSP 100, SSP 500, SSP 1,000, SSP 5,000, and SSP 10,000 notes. Officials say the introduction of higher-value notes is intended to make transactions more efficient and reduce the burden of carrying large amounts of cash.
Minister Mabiordit emphasized that the move is part of broader efforts to revive economic stability, enhance financial systems, and strengthen the purchasing power of citizens across the country.
Economic analysts are watching closely, as the success of the reform will largely depend on accompanying fiscal discipline and public confidence in the new currency.
