Total Solar Eclipse Draws Millions Across Spain and Iceland
Millions of people in Spain and Iceland witnessed a rare total solar eclipse, turning parts of the two countries into viewing points for a spectacular celestial event.
In Spain, authorities expected as many as 6 million visitors to gather across mostly rural areas along the eclipse’s path, including parts of northern Spain and the Balearic Islands. The eclipse occurred shortly before sunset in Spain, creating a striking combination of darkness and fading daylight.
Iceland, with a population of roughly 400,000 people, also prepared for a major influx of visitors, with authorities expecting up to 80,000 tourists to arrive for the event.
For centuries, solar eclipses have inspired awe and fear. The sudden disappearance of sunlight was once interpreted as an omen, a cosmic struggle or a sign of divine power. Today, eclipses are understood as predictable astronomical events, but they continue to draw enormous public interest.
