Catholic Diocese of Rumbek Conducts five-day workshop on Financial management and sustainability

The Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, on Friday, wrapped up a five-day workshop aimed at strengthening financial management and ensuring long-term sustainability of the Diocese amid declining donor support.

The workshop, held at Palica from Monday November 10 to Friday November 14, 2025, brought together Parish Priests, heads of departments, Principals of Diocesan schools, religious, and the clergy.

The sessions focused on practical strategies to improve financial accountability, boost local resource mobilization, and enhance the Diocese’s ability to run its pastoral and developmental programs independently.

Rev. Fr. Andrea Osman Okello, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Parish in Yirol, expressed his gratitude to the participants from various parishes, heads of departments, and the Social Communication Coordinator for organizing the workshop and coming together to discuss the future sustainability of the Diocese.

Fr. Andrea encouraged participants to build healthy working relationships with their colleagues and to promote unity, reconciliation, respect, and understanding among themselves. He emphasized that sisters, priests, and departmental heads are all pastoral agents of the Diocese.

Sr. Anne Muthoni, Principal of Rumbek Comboni Primary School, also in attendance, thanked the facilitators for giving them the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge on sustaining themselves and their institutions.

She urged participants to help the Diocese work toward self-sustainability and not to take their roles for granted—whether in pastoral work, schools, or health centers.

Fr. Peter Abodo Adelio, Parish Priest of Bunagok, shared his personal experience, saying that he had previously been overly dependent on external support, but the workshop reminded him that there are things he can do himself to support both his parish and his personal ministry. He appealed to the participants to put the knowledge they gained into practice and share it within their parishes and communities.

John Sabit Malok, Assistant Coordinator of the Peace and Justice Desk in the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, noted that the issue of sustainability has long been a challenge for the Diocese, and this is not the first time it has been discussed.

Sabit thanked the trainers for enlightening participants with insights and experiences from other parishes that have found ways to sustain their churches. He urged the faithful to understand that the Church does not belong only to the priests, but to the community as well, and therefore, everyone has a responsibility to support it

The training also highlighted the importance of effective communication and coordination between the Diocesan leadership, parishes, departments, and other stakeholders, as well as the vital role of the laity in supporting the local Church.

Fifth Batch of La Salle Boys Secondary School Celebrates Farewell Party

Hundreds of people—children, youth, elders, and clergies—gathered on Friday, November 14, to celebrate the fifth batch of about 50 candidates from La Salle Boys Secondary School who have registered to sit for the forthcoming Nationwide South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Education (SSCSE) exams on December 1, 2025. The celebration took place at the school compound in Rumbek.

The event was organized by the institution’s Administration under the theme “Seeds of Hope: Harvesting the Future We Envision.”
Speaking at the ceremony, the Head Teacher of La Salle Boys Secondary School, Mr. Drani Moses, said the school has graduated 210 students since its establishment—a milestone he described as a great achievement for both the school and the wider community.

He credited this success to the significant contributions of the La Salle Brothers.

Drani urged parents to continue supporting and guiding the outgoing candidates as they pursue further studies. He added that the boys have acquired important skills that will strengthen their academic journey.

Brother Emmanuel Adega, the Director General of La Salle Boys Secondary School, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the parents for trusting the school with their sons and encouraged them to send more children to La Salle and other nearby learning institutions.

He described the candidates as “holy seeds of hope” and assured them that the La Salle community believes in their ability to overcome any challenges ahead.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Nelson Makoi Makur, Lakes State Minister of General Education and Instruction, urged the candidates to intensify their revision as only a few days remain before the national examinations begin.

Makur, speaking on behalf of the state government, appreciated the La Salle Brothers and the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek for their continued efforts in improving the quality of education, encouraging them to persist in their mission.

The Class of 2025—the fifth batch of La Salle Boys Secondary School—proudly named themselves “The Great Pillars.”

CEPO concludes three-day training on non-violent resolution of electoral disputes in Rumbek

A three-day workshop on non-violent approaches to resolving election-related disputes concluded in Rumbek on Saturday, ahead of the anticipated general elections scheduled for December 2026.

The training, organized by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) with funding from the European Union, brought together 30 participants drawn from civil society groups, women’s associations, youth representatives, government institutions, political parties, and the media.

Daniel Laat Kon, Lakes State CEPO Coordinator said the training aimed at helping communities better understand electoral disputes and the mechanisms available for resolving them.

Representing political parties in Lakes State, Mamuor Ajuong Moot said participants were briefed on the institutions mandated to handle electoral disputes, including the National Elections Commission, the Constitutional Review bodies, and the Judiciary.

He added that the SPLM, as the ruling party, is prepared for the upcoming general elections and has already endorsed President Salva Kiir as its national candidate.

State Minister of Peace Building, Hon. Nyanhok Malou Marial, who represented the government, said the workshop broadened their understanding of community expectations ahead of the elections.

She appealed for similar trainings to be extended to rural areas where access to information remains limited.

Meanwhile, Lakes State Elections Commission Chairperson Prof. Khot Kuocnin cautioned against suggestions from some participants that power should be handed over to the army if next year’s elections fail.

Prof. Khot urged communities to focus instead on voter mobilization and registration.
