This afternoon, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, we are hosting a team of three students from La Salle School; Paul Arop, Akhol Kau, and Dominic Oliver, together with their teacher, Prince Zacki Majok, for a two-hour roundtable discussion on the topic "Boys and Positive Masculinity: Building Respectable Men for Society."

What does positive masculinity mean in today's society? How can boys grow into responsible, respectful, and accountable men?

The discussion explores important and sometimes controversial issues, including:
- Why many boys and young men find it difficult to apologise and admit mistakes.
- The importance of recognising that girls and women are not slaves or assets for sale, but equal human beings deserving of dignity and respect.
- Challenging the myth that men must always be tough and never show emotions.

Join us as we hear the perspectives of these young people and their teacher on how to build a generation of men who respect others, take responsibility for their actions, and contribute positively to society.

RUMBEK, June 6, 2026 – The St. Peter Claver Computer and Ecological Training Centre of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek on Saturday held its 17th graduation ceremony, celebrating the successful completion of vocational training by students from three cohorts: Electrical Installation and Systems Maintenance, Mechanics and Driving, and Computer Studies.

A total of 68 male and female students graduated after completing four months of theoretical and practical vocational training. During the ceremony, the graduates were awarded certificates in recognition of their successful completion of the programmes.

The Centre, which is now officially registered by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, issued the certificates to the graduates, ensuring that their qualifications are formally recognized.

In addition, graduates from the Mechanics and Driving programme received start-up tool kits to support them in launching their careers and applying the skills they acquired during the training. The initiative is intended to help the graduates transition more easily into employment and self-employment opportunities.

The occasion was also marked by colorful entertainment, including drama performances, traditional dances, and poetry recitations, which showcased the talents and creativity of the students and added excitement to the celebration.

The event featured inspiring speeches from Catholic priests, tutors, graduates, and a representative of the government, who commended the graduates for their dedication and perseverance. They emphasized the importance of vocational and technical education in addressing unemployment, promoting self-reliance, and contributing to the development of society.

The graduation ceremony marked another milestone in the Centre’s commitment to equipping young people with practical technical and vocational skills that enhance their employability, promote self-reliance, and contribute to the socio-economic development of their communities.

DARD Holds Meeting to Promote National Organizations' Participation in Emergency Response Planning

The Disabled Agency for Rehabilitation and Development (DARD), in partnership with Oxfam, on Tuesday conducted a one-day advocacy meeting for local organizations on emergency response planning and implementation at Serena Hotel in Rumbek.

The workshop brought together government representatives, local and national organizations, media practitioners, and representatives from academic institutions.

Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Deborah Adut Maker, HST-LHL Program Officer, said DARD and Oxfam are implementing a project known as Humanitarian System Transformation through Local Humanitarian Leadership (HST-LHL). She explained that the meeting aimed to advocate for the meaningful involvement and participation of local organizations throughout the entire emergency response planning and implementation process alongside international NGOs.

Maker said the meeting provided an opportunity for national organizations and local actors to strengthen their advocacy skills and preparedness for emergencies that may arise. She noted that the project is being implemented in Rumbek East, Rumbek Centre, and Wulu counties, targeting local actors and national NGOs.

Karkon Allah-Jabu, a representative of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), said the meeting highlighted the risks faced by local humanitarian workers during distributions, field activities, and movement. He noted that while some incidents occur with government knowledge, others do not.

He urged humanitarian organizations to inform relevant government authorities before conducting assessments, distributions, or other activities to ensure their safety and security. He also reaffirmed the government's support for humanitarian actors.

Isaac Makur Mayom, Project Officer at Diar for Rehabilitation and Development Agency (DRDA), emphasized the importance of the meeting in addressing challenges facing local organizations, particularly limited funding and capacity constraints.

He said participants discussed ways to strengthen organizational capacities and improve their ability to implement larger projects in the future. Mayom argued that local organizations possess the necessary skills and experience, noting that many South Sudanese have gained substantial humanitarian experience since the country's independence.

He acknowledged concerns among some donors regarding accountability and corruption but stressed that South Sudanese organizations have the capacity to successfully implement development and humanitarian projects.

Lillian Awut Ater Machiek of Women Insensitive Development Organization (WIDO) urged participants to promote peace within the state. She encouraged local organizations to diversify their services and areas of operation rather than competing for personal interests.

She emphasized the importance of leaving a positive legacy and maintaining a good reputation upon completing projects.

The speakers made their remarks during the closing session of the one-day meeting held on Tuesday at Serena Hotel in Rumbek.

SSNAMA Commemorates International Nurses and Midwives Day in Rumbek

The South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA), Rumbek Branch, on Saturday commemorated the International Nurses and Midwives Day at Rumbek Health Sciences Institute under the theme: “Our Nurses, Our Midwives, Our Future: Strengthening Clinical Excellence and Institutional Capacity in Lakes State.”

The celebration, organized in the form of a seminar, brought together nurses, midwives, health professionals, and government representatives to recognize the vital role healthcare workers play in serving communities.

Speaking during the event, the Chairperson of SSNAMA Rumbek Branch, Meen Santos, explained that the global community annually celebrates the International Day of the Midwife on May 5 and International Nurses Day on May 12. However, SSNAMA decided to commemorate the two important occasions together on May 30, 2026.

Santos said the gathering was meant to reaffirm the commitment of nurses and midwives to continue serving humanity in hospitals and communities despite the challenges they face.

A registered midwife, Martha Aping Dut, urged the government to provide the necessary medical equipment and essential drugs to enable health workers to effectively care for patients, particularly mothers. She also highlighted challenges related to salary scales and motivation, noting that improved welfare would enhance their performance.

Representing registered nurses, Loria Grace Julius urged the government to strengthen and support health teams in order to improve service delivery. She emphasized that healthcare workers require support and timely payment of wages to maintain quality patient care.
“Our patients are our priority, and our government should also make us their priority by clearing our wages,” Julius said.

In his closing remarks, Banok Muorwel, Director of Reproductive Health at the Ministry of Health in Lakes State, who represented the ministry at the event, encouraged nurses and midwives to remain dedicated to their work despite challenges such as shortages of drugs and other essential medical resources required to serve the patients who are in critical condition and the entire society.

The global community officially celebrates International Day of the Midwife on May 5th and International Nurses Day on May 12th every year on the calendar. In Rumbek, the two events were jointly commemorated on Saturday, May 30, 2026, through a seminar aimed at recognizing the contributions of nurses and midwives and discussing ways to strengthen healthcare services in Lakes State.

The commemoration concluded with calls for greater government support, improved working conditions, and increased investment in the health sector to enable nurses and midwives to continue providing quality healthcare services to the people of Lakes State.

Jesuit Hakimani Peace Center Conducts One-Day Training on Election Preparedness and Civic Awareness in Rumbek

The Jesuit Hakimani Peace Center South Sudan, Rumbek Office, in collaboration with the Justice and Peace Desk of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, organized a one-day workshop on Election Preparedness and Civic Awareness aimed at enhancing citizens' understanding of the electoral process.

The workshop, held on Thursday, 28 May 2026, at Palica, brought together 60 participants from five Catholic parishes--Holy Family, Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Theresa, Holy Cross, and Sts. Peter and Paul--as well as representatives from civil society organizations.

Speaking at the closing session, participant representative Nyandit Chuar expressed appreciation to the organizers for providing the training.

She said the workshop had greatly increased her understanding of elections, noting that she had never participated in voting before. According to Chuar, the knowledge gained will help her confidently take part in the upcoming elections.

Santo Madit, representing civil society organizations, commended the Catholic Church and the workshop facilitator, Fr. Anthony Ochen, for the initiative.

He described the training as an important step in promoting public understanding of the electoral process and called on the organizers to develop civic education messages for broadcast on radio stations across the state to reach a wider audience.

Abraham Malual Wantok, Coordinator of the Justice and Peace Desk of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, explained that the workshop was designed to raise awareness and strengthen community capacity ahead of the elections.

He noted that the initiative was a joint effort between the Diocese's Justice and Peace Desk and the Jesuit Hakimani Peace Center South Sudan.

Wantok highlighted the presence of the Jesuits in several parts of the country, including St. Theresa, Akoljal and Cueibet in Rumbek, as well as Wau, Juba, and Maban. He praised participants for their active engagement and revealed plans to organize additional civic education workshops before the elections.

For his part, Fr. Anthony Ochen, Coordinator of the Hakimani Jesuit Peace Center South Sudan, encouraged participants to share the knowledge gained with their communities.

He urged them to avoid spreading discouraging messages and instead promote hope and confidence in the electoral process as a means of achieving positive change.

The workshop concluded with a call for participants to become ambassadors of civic awareness within their communities, contributing to informed and active citizen participation in the forthcoming elections.
