Liberia to Receive 1,200 Asylum Seekers from the United States

The Government of Liberia has announced an agreement to receive 1,200 asylum seekers transferred from the United States to Liberia.

According to Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, the first group, consisting of 20 individuals, is expected to arrive in Liberia on Friday.

Minister Piah explained that the government's decision reflects Liberia's tradition of hospitality and willingness to assist people in need. He emphasized Liberia's history as a country founded on the principles of freedom and said the government has therefore agreed to receive the individuals.

The announcement is expected to generate significant public discussion, particularly regarding the legal status, accommodation, security, welfare, and long-term arrangements for those being transferred.

Further clarification from the Government of Liberia and relevant U.S. authorities will be important in establishing the full terms of the agreement and how the transfer of the 1,200 individuals will be implemented.

Residents Urge Rehabilitation of Cut-Off Road in Aweil Centre

Local residents of Aweil Centre County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are calling on the state government and county authorities to urgently rehabilitate the Awoda–Aroyo road, which has been rendered impassable by heavy rains.

The road, which connects Awoda to Aroyo, the county headquarters, has reportedly remained inaccessible for nearly a year, making movement difficult for residents and affecting access to essential services.

Residents are appealing to the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Government and the Aweil Centre County Commission to intervene and restore the road.

The damaged section is located near the residence of Chan Bashir, a well-known local resident in the area.
Residents say urgent rehabilitation is needed to restore transportation and improve access between Awoda and Aroyo.

‎BREAKING NEWS: New VIP Latrine with Handwashing Facility Completed at Rum-Dier Primary School

‎AWEIL, South Sudan — August 18, 2026
‎Pupils at Rum-Dier Primary School have a new reason to stay in class thanks to a newly completed sanitation facility.
‎
‎The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), with funding from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF), has finished construction of a new 4-stance VIP latrine with an integrated handwashing facility at the school. The facility was officially completed on August 17, 2026.
‎
‎According to the school, the project also includes an accessibility ramp to ensure learners with disabilities can use the latrine safely and with dignity.
‎
‎Head-Teacher Tong Garang announced the completion on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, while speaking to Green Media News.
‎
‎"We are happy to share that NRC, with funding from South Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF), has completed a new 4-stance VIP latrine with hand washing facility at Rum Dier Primary School. We thank NRC and SSHF for supporting education and hygiene for our children", Garang said.
‎
‎School officials say improved sanitation and hygiene will help reduce illness, increase attendance, and create a more conducive learning environment for pupils at Rum-Dier Primary School.
