Graduate Burns Degrees Certificates as he spent 10 years without a job in South Sudan

A university graduate from Maban County has burned all his academic documents after 10 years of failing to get a job.

James Dhiaga Muza graduated in 2016 with a degree in Rural Development Studies. He said he decided to burn the certificates because they were "useless" after years of job applications with no results.

Speaking to Aweil News Agency by phone from Opura in Maban, Muza said:

"I have decided to burn my documents because it is worth doing that. It is useless to keep them. I have done both written and oral interviews, but I was never called back to sign a contract. Is it bad that I studied Rural Development?"

Muza said his goal of going to school was to support himself financially. After 10 years without work, he said he saw no reason to keep the documents.

Maban County is one of the richest counties in Upper Nile State and hosts many NGOs. However, the area has been badly affected after the Donald Trump administration cut humanitarian aid. The funding cuts have forced many people to leave for neighbouring countries like Sudan and Ethiopia.

First Time that U.S. Dollar hits record SSP 720,000 in Juba, South Sudan.

The U.S. dollar has reached a record-breaking high on Juba’s parallel foreign exchange market, trading at SSP 700,000 for buying and SSP 720,000 for selling, according to black market dealers who spoke to Hot in Juba. It is the first time the dollar has reached the SSP 700,000 mark in the parallel market.

The new rates are expected to push up the cost of living and imported goods, including fuel, food, and medicine, as businesses continue to rely on the parallel market for foreign currency.

Meanwhile, the Bank of South Sudan listed its official exchange rate at SSP 4,694.2674 for buying and SSP 4,847.5395 for selling, highlighting the wide gap between official and parallel market rates.

We don't care how you go and what will happen after you... We are still tall and defensive.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has withdrawn its peacekeepers from a temporary operating base in Akobo County, Jonglei State, after months of deployment aimed at protecting civilians affected by conflict.

UNMISS says it will continue civilian protection efforts through regular patrols and dialogue with local stakeholders despite the withdrawal. The mission noted that the closure had been delayed due to deteriorating security conditions and ongoing tensions between government and opposition forces.

The withdrawal comes as the UN faces a major liquidity crisis, forcing budget reductions and cuts to peacekeeping operations across South Sudan.

Akobo witnessed intense fighting between SSPDF and SPLA-IO forces earlier this year, displacing thousands of civilians. Although many residents have started returning home, concerns remain about the security situation.
