Over 50,000 people have fled eastern DRC to Burundi, risking their lives swimming the Rusizi River with possessions as rafts. Over 20 have died in two weeks. Pope Francis had a restful fifteenth night in Rome's Gemelli hospital, where he is being treated for bilateral pneumonia.

"As in recent days, the night passed calmly, and the Pope is now resting," said a Holy See Press Office statement on Friday morning.

According to the Thursday evening press release, the Pope's clinical condition continued to improve, though it remains "complex."

The Press Office added that his prognosis remains guarded, noting that his therapy is continuing.

He spent Thursday afternoon in prayer and attending to various work-related activities.

Government to extend academic year amid heatwave disruptions

The Ministry of General Education and Instruction has announced plans to extend the academic year and increase teaching hours to compensate for the recent suspension of school operations caused by an ongoing heatwave.

Deputy Minister Martin Tako emphasized the need to review the country’s Education Act to potentially adjust the school opening period to March or April, aiming to align the academic calendar with more favorable weather conditions.

“The ministry, in collaboration with the education cluster, will convene to discuss adjustments to the academic calendar and explore strategies to reduce school closures during the dry and hot seasons,” Tako stated.

In a firm stance, the ministry has rejected requests from several schools seeking exemptions from the mandated closures due to high temperatures. According to Deputy Minister Tako, allowing schools to remain open would pose serious health risks to both students and teachers.

“The safety of our learners and educators is our priority. Granting exemptions would expose them to extreme heat, which is unacceptable,” he added.

The proposed changes aim to ensure educational continuity while safeguarding the well-being of students and staff amid climate challenges.

Arne Slot will be absent from the touchline for Liverpool’s next two matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa.

The Liverpool boss has received a harsher punishment following his red card against Everton in the Premier League. Slot has been handed a two-match suspension.

The league authorities announced the decision on their website Thursday, stating that referee Michael Oliver showed Slot the red card for using “offensive, insulting, or abusive language.”

As a result, the 46-year-old Dutch coach will be banned from the touchline for Liverpool’s upcoming league games against Wolves and Aston Villa.

Slot’s assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, was also shown a red card in the same match against Everton. Neither was allowed to speak to the media after the game.

The Merseyside derby ended in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, but tempers flared late on. In the eighth minute of added time, James Tarkowski scored Everton’s equalizer. Following the goal, Abdoulaye Doucouré celebrated in front of Liverpool’s fans, provoking Curtis Jones, who confronted him.

As the final whistle blew, a heated altercation broke out, involving players from both benches. Referee Oliver eventually handed red cards to Doucouré and Jones for their roles in the incident.

24 PHONE USE RULES FOR COUPLES:

4. End the talk on a high. Say "I love you", say a joke, a compliment, a warm phrase before you hang up. Hang up with a smile

5. It is OK to chat with friends online. But never chat with another person more than you chat with your partner

6. If you will be busy, notify your partner you will not be able to pick up calls or reply texts promptly. Inform your partner what you will be doing and approximately for how long. This prepares your partner and brings peace because your partner will not feel ignored

7. Flirting on phone is good but only flirt with your partner

8. Tell off people who try to flirt with you, entice you and charm you on phone. Let them know that you are taken

9. Take lots of photos and videos together to capture moments. You will need those pics and videos in future as you look back

10. When you go out on dates, keep the phone away, minimize phone use so that you focus on each other

11. Don't make a habit of walking away from your partner to answer phone calls. Your partner will perceive you are hiding something or having an affair. Love is about perception

12. After the date and you don't live together; man, call her up and check on her, tell her you got home safe; lady, send him a text, thanking him for a wonderful time

SPLM-IO, White Army advancing towards Baliet for imminent attack, SSPDF warns

The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) has raised alarm over an imminent attack on Baliet County by SPLM-IO forces and White Army militias.

In a press statement, SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. L*l Ruai Koang disclosed that intelligence reports and aerial surveillance had detected large columns of SPLM-IO fighters and White Army militias advancing towards Gelachel and Baliet town. Initially, their mobilization aimed to disrupt troop rotations in Nasir, but recent intelligence indicates a shift toward launching large-scale offensives against civilians in Baliet.

The movement of these forces has already caused mass civilian displacement, with SSPDF warning of potential armed confrontations. Maj. Gen. L*l Ruai urged the hostile groups to halt their advance, retreat, and disperse to avoid further escalation.
