📚 Book Review: South Sudan: Elites, Ethnicity, and Endless Wars by Dr. Adwok Nyaba

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 – A Must-Read for Every South Sudanese

Reviewed by Chudier Online Library (COB) Readers

South Sudan: Elites, Ethnicity, and Endless Wars by Dr. Adwok Nyaba is one of the most thought-provoking books on the political history, governance, and conflicts of South Sudan. Drawing on his experience as both a participant and observer, the author examines the country's political journey from the liberation struggle to independence and the challenges that followed. He argues that many of South Sudan's difficulties stem from failures in leadership, weak institutions, ethnic politics, and the inability of the political elite to transform the aspirations of independence into sustainable peace and development.

One of the book's strongest messages is that the future of South Sudan depends on accountable leadership, strong institutions, national unity, and informed citizens. Dr. Nyaba encourages readers to engage in critical thinking, honest debate, and national dialogue to address the country's social, political, and economic challenges. He also highlights the importance of education and civic responsibility in building a peaceful and prosperous nation.

This book is not only for politicians—it is equally valuable for students, researchers, educators, civil servants, journalists, community leaders, members of civil society, and every South Sudanese who wants to better understand the country's history and explore ideas for a more stable future. While readers may agree or disagree with some of the author's analyses and conclusions, the book provides an opportunity to reflect critically on South Sudan's past and consider different perspectives on its future.

Recommendation

I highly recommend this book to:

National and State Government leaders
Members of Parliament
University students and researchers
Teachers and educators
Journalists and media professionals
Civil society organizations
Youth leaders and peacebuilders
Every South Sudanese interested in governance, peace, and nation-building

This book reminds us that lasting peace, justice, and development require informed leadership, accountable institutions, and active citizen participation. It encourages readers to think critically about the country's challenges and their own role in building a better South Sudan.

Book Review: Servant Leadership in Action – A Must-Read for South Sudan's Current and Future Leaders

Leadership is often associated with authority, influence, and power. However, Servant Leadership in Action, edited by Ken Blanchard and Renee Broadwell, presents a different and more enduring model of leadership—one rooted in service, integrity, humility, and the growth of others. This book is not merely a guide for business executives; it is an essential resource for political leaders, public servants, educators, faith leaders, youth leaders, and anyone entrusted with the responsibility of serving others.

One of the most powerful lessons from the early chapters is that a true leader is a servant first. Robert K. Greenleaf's philosophy explains that authentic leadership begins with a genuine desire to serve others and is measured by whether those being served become healthier, wiser, freer, and more capable of serving others themselves. This idea challenges the traditional belief that leadership is about status or control.

The chapter "Characteristics of Servant Leaders" by Larry C. Spears identifies ten qualities that define effective servant leadership: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptual thinking, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community. These principles are highly relevant to countries seeking peace, unity, and sustainable development.

For South Sudan, these lessons are particularly meaningful. As our nation continues to strengthen its institutions while addressing challenges such as peacebuilding, economic development, education, and national reconciliation, leaders who genuinely listen to citizens, empathize with communities, make decisions based on long-term national interests, and invest in the growth of people are better positioned to strengthen public trust and create lasting progress.

Another compelling chapter, "Servant Leadership Is Conscious Leadership" by Raj Sisodia, emphasizes that great leaders place the interests of others before their own. It highlights qualities such as strength, enthusiasm, compassion, flexibility, long-term thinking, emotional intelligence, systems thinking, and moral purpose. These qualities are especially valuable for leaders responsible for shaping institutions that will serve future generations.

The book also reminds readers that leadership is measured not only by immediate achievements but by the legacy left behind. Great leaders build organizations and systems that continue to thrive long after they leave office.

One of the strongest messages throughout the book is that trust is the foundation of leadership. Stephen M. R. Covey explains that servant leadership naturally creates trust because people recognize leaders whose genuine intention is to serve others rather than themselves. Trust builds stronger relationships, effective teamwork, and resilient institutions.

⭐ Recommendation

I highly recommend Servant Leadership in Action to:

National and State Government leaders
Members of Parliament and public administrators
County Commissioners and local government officials
Educators and school administrators
Church and community leaders
Civil society organizations
Business executives and entrepreneurs
University students and young professionals
Emerging leaders preparing to serve South Sudan in the future

This book demonstrates that true leadership is not about commanding people—it is about serving them with integrity, humility, wisdom, and vision. If more leaders embrace these principles, they can help build stronger institutions, foster unity, and promote sustainable development.

As South Sudan continues its journey toward peace and nation-building, Servant Leadership in Action offers timeless lessons that can inspire a new generation of leaders committed to serving the people with excellence, accountability, and compassion.

THANKSGIVING MESSAGE TO GOD FOR THE GIFT OF LIFE.

The Office of Junub Aid Media and the Management of JAMedia TV join the family of Koang Tut Kuol (aka 6ix on the Face) in giving thanks and glory to Almighty God for the precious gift of life through the birth of Princess Nyamusic Koang Tut Kuol, born on 10 June 2026.

This joyous occasion carries a special story of faith, hope, and God's faithfulness. Seventeen years ago, Koang Tut Kuol (6ix on the Face) released and dedicated a song titled "My Daughter Go School" to his future unborn daughter.

It was a heartfelt expression of hope, love, and a dream for the daughter he believed God would one day bless him with.

In the same spirit of faith, Koang Tut Kuol and his Music Director, Jackdieng Gatkek, made a spiritual promise and prayed that God would bless them with a firstborn baby girl.

Eight years ago, God answered that prayer in the life of Music Director Jackdieng Gatkek by blessing him with his firstborn daughter.

Today, we witness God's continued faithfulness as He has now blessed Koang Tut Kuol with a beautiful baby girl, Princess Nyamusic Koang Tut Kuol.

As we celebrate the arrival of Nyamusic, we are reminded that God's timing is perfect and that He hears and answers prayers. What began as a dream, a song, and a promise has become a living testimony of God's grace.

We pray that Princess Nyamusic grows in wisdom, knowledge, good health, and God's favor. May she fulfill the hopes and aspirations her family has for her, and may she become a blessing to her community, South Sudan, and the world.

On behalf of the Office of Junub Aid Media and the Management of JAMedia TV, we share in the joy of the family and congratulate Koang Tut Kuol (6ix on the Face) on this remarkable blessing.

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him." — Psalm 127:3

Congratulations to Koang Tut Kuol (6ix on the Face), family, friends, and well-wishers on the birth of Princess Nyamusic Koang Tut Kuol.
