đź”´ MSF Condemns Abduction of Health Ministry Staff in Morobo County, and Urges for Immediate Protection of Healthcare Workers

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) strongly condemns the abduction of a Ministry of Health (MoH) staff member from an MSF ambulance in South Sudan’s Morobo County, Central Equatoria State, at around 10:00 am on 25 July 2025. Although the staff member was released unharmed on 26 July, this incident further highlights the growing violence against healthcare workers in South Sudan.

The staff member was accompanying patients who had been referred for advanced medical care in Yei and were returning to Morobo after their discharge. During the journey, armed individuals intercepted the ambulance, forced the MoH staff member to leave the vehicle, and abducted her. The MSF driver, other staff, and patients were allowed to continue.

"What we are witnessing is a disturbing and unacceptable trend, where the impartial provision of healthcare services faces indiscriminate attacks," says Dr. Ferdinand Atte, MSF’s head of mission in South Sudan. "This incident is not just an attack on one individual; it is a direct assault on the healthcare system meant to serve the most vulnerable in our communities."

Over the past few months, there has been a deeply concerning rise in attacks on healthcare in South Sudan. MSF has been forced to close two hospitals in South Sudan due to these attacks. In Yei and Morobo counties, the volatile security situation continues to present ongoing challenges for the delivery of medical and humanitarian services. In May, MSF made the difficult decision to reduce its outreach services in these counties due to increased insecurity. As a result, MSF provided only 3,427 consultations in May and June 2025—half the number recorded during the same period in 2024. This sharp decline leaves already isolated communities, who live far from health facilities, with even fewer life-saving medical services.

Breaking: Pope Francis dies at 88

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at age 88 in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

The pontiff is fondly remembered in South Sudan for his powerful peace efforts, including his 2019 meeting with President Kiir and Riek Machar, where he famously kissed their feet urging peace.

He later visited Juba in 2023, becoming the first pope to visit South Sudan, bringing global attention to the country’s suffering and hope for peace. His death has sparked mourning and deep gratitude across the South Sudanese nation.

Rwanda expels Belgium diplomats

Rwanda says it has cut diplomatic ties with Belgium and ordered all of the European country’s diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, drawing a swift response from Brussels.

In a statement on Monday, the Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation accused Belgium of “consistently” undermining Kigali “during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo” (DRC).

In turn, Belgium said Rwandan diplomats were no longer welcome in the country.

The Trump government is set to prevent citizens from these countries from entering the US. Those on the red list are set to be banned permanently. Those on the orange list will have their visas restricted. Those on the yellow list have been given a chance to address issues such as human rights abuses by the government or other actors; otherwise, their citizens would be banned permanently or restricted from entering the US.

South Sudan is in the Orange category where “Visas are sharply restricted.”

🚨BREAKING NEWS: Government confirms presence of Ugandan troops in the country, ongoing operation in Nasir

Information Minister Michael Makuei has confirmed that Ugandan forces are currently operating in South Sudan. According to Makuei, the presence of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is based on a longstanding security agreement between the two countries.

He stated that the agreement, originally signed to facilitate joint operations against the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), allows Uganda to deploy troops in South Sudan for security-related missions.

Makuei also acknowledged that government forces are currently conducting an operation against the White Army in Nasir, a conflict-prone area in Upper Nile State. However, he did not provide further details on the scale of the operation or the specific role of the UPDF in the ongoing conflict.
