Uganda Enforces New Travel Document Rules for South Sudanese Travelers

The Ugandan government has introduced new regulations requiring all South Sudanese travelers using temporary travel documents to ensure they have a validity of at least six months. Any traveler arriving in Uganda with documents valid for only three months will be denied entry and immediately deported back to South Sudan. This new rule applies to all travelers entering Uganda, whether through land borders or airports.

With Christmas fast approaching, many South Sudanese citizens travel back and forth to Uganda for holidays, family visits, and business purposes. The timing of this regulation makes it urgent for the Government of South Sudan—particularly the Ministry of Interior and the Directorate of Immigration—to act swiftly in informing citizens and amending the validity period of temporary travel documents to six months instead of the current three. Failure to act could result in a significant number of travelers being stranded or turned away at the border during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.

The new requirement is part of Uganda’s efforts to align its immigration policies with international standards and ensure stricter border control. South Sudanese citizens are therefore urged to check their documents carefully before traveling and make the necessary adjustments to avoid disruptions. The Ministry of Interior must prioritize this matter to ensure that travelers are not inconvenienced, especially during this festive season when many families rely on smooth cross-border movement.

It is essential for all South Sudanese citizens planning to visit Uganda to verify their documents well in advance. The new regulation is already in effect, and travelers arriving without the proper six-month validity will face immediate deportation.
